Mexico Police Officer Incident Puts Texas Law Enforcement Under a Harsh Spotlight

The news got to Texas quickly, even tho it came from northern Mexico. A man who had been a police officer in at least six Texas towns and was in the army was being held in Saltillo prison on Thursday evening. He was accused of killing three people and leaving the mother of his child in critical condition. The authorities say it all began over a three-year-old boy.

Chad Eberle, 35, was caught on Wednesday at the Piedras Negras international bridge, which is right next to Eagle Pass. Investigators in Mexico say he was trying to get back to Texas. With the kid. Right after the shooting. Some details stick with you, like the fact that he was arrested before he could cross the street.

The warrant charging Eberle with femicide and qualified homicide came from the office of the attorney general for Coahuila. Femicide is the killing of a woman because she is a woman, according to Mexican law. The attack killed three people: two women and a man. The people who were shot were at a home in Saltillo on August 4. Their names are Ana Laura, 44; Laura Jaquelín, 22; and Emanuel, 44. The mother of the child, who is 26 years old, was shot in the head and was said to be in critical condition.

It wasn’t just the violence that made this case stand out. He had worked as a school district police officer for Northside ISD and as a deputy constable in Bexar County. He had also held jobs in Somerset, Marble Falls, Gregory, Lockney, Bangs, and Santa Anna. That man was given a badge and told to keep it safe at a lot of places. In 2022, the Lockney Police Department wrote on Facebook that he was a proud Army veteran. Officials from the city of Santa Anna confirmed that he was a reserve officer hired in November 2025 and working one weekend a month.

When you look at that paper trail, it seems like no one was paying very close attention to the bigger picture. There are background checks and procedures in place, so that’s not an accusation. But it does make me wonder how someone can move thru so many departments and how much each one really knows about what’s going on in the rest of their life.

The Mexican government moved quickly. There were real-time updates from Attorney General Federico Fernández, who confirmed the arrest warrant, the transfer to Saltillo’s men’s prison, and the placement of the three-year-old in the care of Pronnif, the state’s child welfare agency. “Protecting children is very important,” Fernández said. The boy was not hurt. He was three years old and was watching all of this happen in the way that three-year-olds watch things: he wasn’t understanding anything but maybe taking it all in.

The part of the story that is harder to simplify is the custody dispute. These kinds of fights over a child between parents who come from different countries with different laws and expectations are really tough. Things might have been getting worse for a while. That doesn’t explain why three people died. That doesn’t make sense. However, it gives some more details about what police think happened in that Saltillo home.

Officials from Coahuila said they had been in touch with the U.S. consulate the whole time. In a statement, the city of Santa Anna said that its police department was also in touch with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement and authorities from other countries. Everyone is in touch. The kid is safe. Police have caught the man they think killed the people.

A lot of things are still not clear, like what was said that day, how the legal process works in Coahuila, and what the diplomatic side of this will turn out to be in the end. It’s clear that three families in Saltillo are sad because they lost someone they didn’t expect to lose on August 22.

Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
