DeAndre Cortez Way, popularly known as Soulja Boy, shared a picture of himself standing in front of an American flag on Instagram on October 10, 2026. “SOULJA BOY 2028” was the caption. There was no press conference. Not a word. There is no opening of a campaign headquarters in Iowa. Just a picture with the words “a new chapter, a bigger vision” in the caption. It received hundreds of thousands of likes in a matter of hours, sparking an ongoing discussion.

The 36-year-old rapper, who sold over 3 million digital copies of his song “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” before most people knew what a digital download was, is now claiming he wants to take over the nation. He listed four areas he would prioritize as president in the post: education, criminal justice reform, economic opportunity, and the advancement of artificial intelligence and technology. It’s reasonable to wonder if that counts as a platform. The fact that the attention is genuine is less questionable.

Way was born in Chicago, but at the age of six, his family relocated to Atlanta. He moved to Batesville, Mississippi, when he was fourteen, and his father gave him a home recording studio. He essentially wrote the first draft of what a self-promoted digital music career could look like when he began uploading music online as a teenager, before the algorithms, before TikTok, and before any of that infrastructure existed. In 2007, his debut single spent seven nonconsecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. That tale of a child without a label and a home studio reaching the top of the charts speaks to his approach to challenges.

Soulja Boy seems to view the presidency more as the next frontier to conquer than as a challenge to govern. He presented the post as a logical continuation of a career that has progressed through tech, business, and music—a progression rather than a sharp left turn. He wrote, “I’ve always believed in thinking bigger.” That might be entirely sincere. The two are not mutually exclusive; it’s also possible that this is branding at its most ambitious level.

But all of this is set against the backdrop of the legal record. Way has been arrested on several occasions in Georgia and California, including a 2014 conviction for carrying a loaded firearm, a 2019 probation violation that led to jail time, and a 2025 weapons arrest that the prosecution eventually decided not to pursue. Two major verdicts against him have been rendered by civil courts, including one in 2025 that awarded a former assistant over $4 million in response to allegations of assault and sexual battery; his lawyers are challenging this decision. He is still eligible to run despite all of this. According to the Constitution, a candidate must only be a natural-born citizen, be at least 35 years old, and have lived in the United States for 14 years. Despite having a felony conviction, Donald Trump was re-elected. The discussion now heavily incorporates that precedent.

Politicians who are entertainers are nothing new. From Hollywood, Ronald Reagan went to the White House. Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected governor of California. Before becoming the actual president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy portrayed a fictional president on Ukrainian television. In 2020, Kanye West was listed on ballots in a number of states. This announcement was already envisioned in a 2019 SNL sketch, and Soulja Boy shared it on his own social media at the time, indicating how seriously he has taken the concept, at least in theory.

He hasn’t submitted any paperwork to the Federal Election Commission, disclosed his party affiliation, or presented any kind of comprehensive policy stance. This is a social media post with aspirations to become president as of right now. That could develop into something more organized. Alternatively, it may continue to be what it is now: a highly successful work of cultural theater by a person who has a better grasp of public attention than nearly everyone in his generation. Which of those this turns into is still unknown. However, the dialog has begun, and in 2026, initiating the dialog may be the entire point.

Sierra has a strong, deep connection to Kansas City, from the neighborhoods east of Troost to the discussions that take place in the city hall halls. Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
