Bert Cobra Kai – The Smallest Student With the Biggest Heart in the Dojo

Many people seem to forget a scene that occurs early in Cobra Kai. Alongside a group of teenagers who are all attempting to appear tougher than they actually are, a small, slightly anxious child enters the Cobra Kai dojo. They won’t last very long. However, Bert, the youngest member of the group, stays. Even though the character isn’t always given enough screen time to make his point more clearly, that detail alone says something about him.

After seeing Miguel Diaz break up a gang of bullies in a school cafeteria, Bert joined Cobra Kai. To be honest, that origin story is incredibly relatable. It has a way of making karate seem like the solution to everything when you see someone get up and fight back. The goal of Johnny Lawrence’s brutal opening session is to make the weak leave. It is sarcastic and intimidating. Many pupils do. Bert doesn’t. Even though it’s a brief moment, it sticks.

Bert plays a largely supporting role during the first few seasons. During training exercises, he mixes concrete. During the school brawl in Season 2, he engages in a tough, back-and-forth battle with Nathaniel. He breaks Nathaniel’s glasses before being pinned down, but he doesn’t really win. This type of fight is highly in character, but it doesn’t end up on highlight reels. In practically every way, Bert competes above his weight class.

In Season 3, Kreese, who had already taken over the dojo and was leading it in a darker direction, demands that a student feed a hamster to a snake. This is the moment that truly defines Bert. It’s the type of test that reveals everything about Cobra Kai’s transformation under Kreese’s influence. Bert declines. He is expelled. And that quiet, non-theatrical refusal may be the most morally obvious choice any student in the show makes.

In a sort of full circle, he ends up working for Johnny Lawrence at Eagle Fang. Bert then trains with both the Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang dojos. In Season 5, he aids in the battle to defeat Terry Silver. Season after season, he continues to appear, which is more than most supporting characters in a show this full can say.

Bert’s actor, Owen Morgan, began the show as a supporting cast member. He was sacrificing himself and his family in order to engage in something new. After two weeks, he was approached by the production team and asked if he would like to try out for a real role. He understood. It’s important to note that he has created something truly memorable from a role that could have easily remained decorative. That trajectory—from background extra to recurring character over six seasons—is the kind of story that doesn’t happen very often.

The fact that Morgan is an actual black belt in real life also has a subtle allure. Bert’s physical portrayal seems to have been influenced by this; fans have noticed a certain level of grounded credibility in his movements during fight scenes. This was bluntly stated in a Reddit thread: if Bert’s abilities match his actor’s actual training, the character is more powerful than he is ever given credit for.

In a show full of characters torn between loyalty and corruption, it’s difficult not to find Bert’s arc a little satisfying. The All Valley Tournament was not won by him. There was never a dramatic spotlight episode for him. But when it mattered, he left cruelty behind, found a better place, and continued to fight. In a series centered on the question of what it truly means to be merciless, Bert’s solution was actually rather straightforward, and he discovered it before the majority of the adults did.

Sierra has a strong, deep connection to Kansas City, from the neighborhoods east of Troost to the discussions that take place in the city hall halls. Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
