Columbus Zoo Lantern Festival 2025 Lights Up Ohio Like Never Before

Walking through the Columbus Zoo at night, instead of being led by path lights, but by luminous turtles, phoenixes with wings that pulse like a heartbeat, and towering LED dragons, is unquestionably magical. The Lantern Festival blurs the boundaries between fantasy and nature in a remarkably effective way, welcoming visitors with glowing giants that feel both ancient and futuristic from the first evening on July 31, 2025.

Incorporating handcrafted lanterns, which were painstakingly made by Zigong, China artisans, has allowed the Zoo to honor centuries-old craftsmanship while also making it very evident that this is no typical after-hours event. Located just 20 minutes outside of downtown Columbus, each intricately detailed lantern, which is lit by multicolored LEDs, tells a tale of mythology, wildlife, or imagination.

The need for seasonal events has grown in recent years as zoos and aquariums seek to increase their appeal and diversify their revenue streams. This trend is elevated by the Columbus Zoo Lantern Festival, which does more than simply follow it. A group of more than twenty Chinese artists worked with Hanart Culture to turn the Zoo’s walkways into luminous art corridors. Through this collaboration, the event significantly enhanced the Zoo’s reputation as a cultural destination and nighttime attendance.

Families especially benefit from the experience. All rides, which typically call for individual tickets, are covered. Without their parents constantly taking out their wallets, children can now spin on the carousel, get splashed on Havoc Harbor, and then pose under a 30-foot mantis lantern. The festival is surprisingly affordable for both local families and visitors from out of town because parking is already included in the ticket price, which is an often-overlooked benefit.

There were some familiar faces enjoying the glow during the festival’s soft launch in late July. Under the phoenix lantern, Ohio State quarterback Dillon James posted an Instagram story, and Columbus-born actress Keri Russell reportedly went covertly with her kids. The wider cultural impact is demonstrated by their tacit support. Not just a kid’s show, this is turning into a yearly pilgrimage for people looking for wonder, creativity, and a respite from screens.

With careful planning, the Zoo created an event that appeals to all ages. Grandparents are frequently spotted remembering their own childhood lanterns, while their grandchildren sprint in the direction of real-time color-changing animated jellyfish. It’s a scene that feels incredibly timeless and human despite its imported materials and contemporary technology.

By presenting both mythical and actual animals in lantern form, the festival invites guests to consider our duty to preserve living things as well as Asian folklore. It is especially creative to use soft messaging in the context of environmental awareness. The Lantern Festival uses scale and light to communicate, as opposed to daytime displays that depend on signage or docents, giving it a visual and emotional impact.

Forums like Reddit have questioned whether upcharges weaken the conservation mission, and the Zoo has faced criticism for profiting from seasonal events in recent years. However, the Lantern Festival this year presents a strong argument in opposition. Both animal care and community programming are funded by the money raised. It’s a reinvention, not a diversion.

Employee feedback has been equally illuminating. According to a longtime employee, occasions such as these reignite their enthusiasm. It feels new to be a part of something new, with new merchandise, rotating acts, and cultural artistry, after putting in thousands of hours during annual programs like Wildlights.

It feels incredibly reassuring to stroll alongside actual people through a fantasy-lit landscape during a time when digital entertainment frequently takes over our attention. Visitors don’t hurry. While listening to gentle instrumental music and lingering under lotus lanterns, they catch each other looking up rather than down at phones. Even though it’s only a short pause, many people need that emotional reset.

Nightly performances with Asian cultural roots add authenticity to the experience, even though the entertainment schedule is constantly changing. Visitors can enjoy immersive storytelling in addition to stunning visuals as acrobats, folk musicians, and traditional puppet acts perform under illuminated canopies. Through the presentation of cultural performances and visual installations, the festival effectively connects entertainment and education.

There are VIP golf cart tours that can accommodate up to 10 people with a private guide for those seeking more individualized access. For families with young children, elderly relatives, or mobility issues, this option is extremely versatile despite being more expensive. Plus, Instagram’s travel influencers have already found that those carts offer unparalleled photo opportunities.

The evening walks will probably be even more fun as September approaches because of the cooler weather. The event will take place entirely outside, so the zoo has reminded everyone to wear appropriate clothing. The lanterns retain their enchantment regardless of the weather, whether it’s a humid August evening or a crisp autumn night.

It would not be surprising if zoos in Cincinnati, Cleveland, or even Indianapolis hosted similar events in the years to come. Instead of being the largest or most commercial, Columbus has established itself as a trendsetter by creating something that feels personal, deliberate, and artistically ambitious. It is uncommon to find that balance. And quite successful.
