Hayden Panettiere and Neutrogena: The Contract Cancellation That Still Hurts to Read About

There is a certain kind of quiet that says everything. Silence like when someone keeps a secret out of loyalty or to show respect. Hayden Panettiere talked about a different kind of silence after her ten-year relationship with Neutrogena ended in 2015. It was cold, businesslike, and meant to be final.

Panettiere said in a podcast earlier this year, “I had worked with these people for 10 years and I remember not hearing a word from anyone.” That’s when she paused, and it might have said more than anything else she said in the interview.

Panettiere became a Neutrogena spokesperson in 2006, when she was still a teenager and had just become famous on TV. She wrote in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, published in 2026 that the partnership changed her in ways that were not just how she looked in public. Because of it, she dressed a certain way. She didn’t want to be photographed with a drink in her hand. In her own words, she spent her early years in Hollywood “playing the role of Hayden Panettiere, Neutrogena Girl.” A young woman who is still trying to figure out who she is can’t keep up that kind of image.

The relationship lasted through ten years of being watched by paparazzi, tabloids writing about her body, and the constant attention that comes with being young and famous. Neutrogena’s morality clause, which was very strict, seemed to cover everything. Panettiere kept her promise for years. Then she went on Live! in 2015. with Kelly and Michael and told them the truth about her depression after giving birth to her daughter. She said it wasn’t her plan. It was true, so it just came out.

Right now, everyone is talking about what came next. The brand tried to drop her. Reports say that her lawyers fought back, saying that firing her would be illegal in this case, and she was ultimately kept on by the company for the rest of her contract. Panettiere said she was sure she wouldn’t be asked back, though. She wasn’t.

The way I read all of this now makes me think that Neutrogena made a smart choice at a time when talking about postpartum depression was still seen as touchy in popular culture. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that eight out of ten women who have recently given birth have symptoms. The rates have grown by two times in the last ten years. Back in 2015, Panettiere said it was “completely uncontrollable and really painful.” She said that women need help. It looked like the brand needed something new.

The story came up again almost right away after Panettiere’s death on August 16 at age 36. Fans who remembered the interview from 2015 put the pieces together, and the response was quick. Within three days, the search term “Neutrogena boycott” went up by more than 5,000% on Google Trends. Forty thousand TikTok users were talking about a full boycott of the product. In the immediate aftermath, shares in Kenvue Inc., which is the parent company of Neutrogena, fell by more than 2%.

Liam Fitzpatrick, a brand crisis expert, made it clear: punishing a mother who talks about her problems is something people don’t forget easily, and Neutrogena’s ten years of silence only confirmed what its actions had already said. Any statement the brand makes now will probably come across as an attempt to fix the problem rather than a real admission of fault. That’s what it costs to not say anything for ten years.

It’s hard not to notice that Panettiere worked on this story for years before enough people paid attention. It’s in a book she wrote. It was something she talked about on a show. In the days following her death, it’s still one of the first things people think of when her name is mentioned. Not as a scandal, but as a small but well-known example of what famous women risk when they talk openly about their bodies and minds.

Postpartum depression is not a sign of bad character. It is not a risk for the brand. In 2015, Panettiere seemed to know that instinctively when she told the truth on a talk show couch. Now the real question is whether the institutions and brands that surround famous women have caught up. There are still many reasons to doubt whether they have.

Sierra has a strong, deep connection to Kansas City, from the neighborhoods east of Troost to the discussions that take place in the city hall halls. Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
