Rayna Vallandingham – The Real-Life World Champion Who Made Cobra Kai’s Zara Malik Impossible to Ignore

A certain type of casting choice makes sense as soon as you see it on screen. Many viewers were curious about Zara Malik’s origins when she first appeared in Season 6 of Netflix’s Cobra Kai. She moved with a level of accuracy that is difficult to imitate. It turns out that’s because Zara’s actress, Rayna Vallandingham, isn’t pretending.

Vallandingham was born in 2003 in Encinitas, California, to a Dutch father and an Indian mother. When she was about two years old, her grandfather introduced her to taekwondo, which seems almost unbelievable until you see what she is capable of at twenty-three. She earned her first black belt when she was six years old. She won her first world championship in the American Taekwondo Association by the age of eight. It’s the type of biography that would appear overdone in a film, but it actually belongs to a real person who went on to make a film out of it.

Vallandingham won 13 ATA world titles in traditional forms, weapons categories, bo staff, and nunchaku during her competitive career. That’s not just breadth; it’s the kind of long-term dominance in a sport that calls for years of consistency rather than just one outstanding performance. In order to pursue her acting career, she eventually relocated to Los Angeles, where she debuted in the movie Underdog Kids at the age of ten. A cameo in Shawn Mendes’ 2018 song “Youth” was among the subsequent appearances in music videos. However, Cobra Kai was the one who first exposed her to a truly large audience.

The show’s writers obviously enjoyed creating the multi-layered character of Zara Malik. During the Sekai Taikai international tournament arc, she was introduced as the female captain of the Iron Dragons, an unbeaten rival dojo. Within the show’s universe, Zara is a social media influencer who is arrogant in a way that seems unique to that world. Sponsors pay for her travels, and viewers follow her every step. Vallandingham herself has millions of real-world social media followers, making it an intriguing mirror. The person who cast this role seemed to know exactly what they were doing.

Zara’s confidence as an antagonist falls somewhere between being genuinely menacing and almost amusing. She most famously clashes with Peyton List’s character, Tory Nichols, and their rivalry intensifies throughout the season’s second and third parts. It culminates in the Sekai Taikai girls’ finals, where Zara loses for the first time on screen. This moment carries a lot of weight, in part because the fight choreography merits it and in part because Vallandingham has dedicated her entire life to making those movements appear authentic.

The way Vallandingham’s casting avoids one of the oldest issues in martial arts filmmaking—the difference between an actor who can perform and an athlete who can act—makes it feel genuinely astute. Most productions are forced to select one or make a compromise. Growing up, Vallandingham developed a screen presence while competing at the top levels of her sport. Few resumes have that combination.

She speaks out about women in martial arts off-screen, purposefully using phrases like “kick like a girl” as a sign of strength rather than a slight. Although it’s a minor detail, it provides insight into her approach to the field she’s going into. In addition to Cobra Kai, she is rumored to have a recurring role in the second season of the spy thriller Citadel and will play Juli in the Street Fighter reboot. The trajectory is pointing in an intriguing direction, but it’s still early.

When Cobra Kai cast Zara Malik, it knew exactly what it was doing. The character needed someone who could persuade viewers that she was on par with those who had been on the show for six seasons. Without much effort, Rayna Vallandingham entered and presented that argument. It’s not simple. It’s difficult not to wonder how much more range she still has to show as we watch it develop throughout Season 6.

Sierra has a strong, deep connection to Kansas City, from the neighborhoods east of Troost to the discussions that take place in the city hall halls. Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
