Seeing a name from your early years reappear in the news in situations like these can be subtly unsettling. The 44-year-old Erik von Detten, who once charmed a generation of Disney Channel viewers by skating across the screen in Brink! and voicing the sneering Sid Phillips in Toy Story, is now facing a lawsuit unrelated to Hollywood.

Von Detten, who was born in San Diego on October 3, 1982, had a career in the 1990s and early 2000s that most child actors would have envied. He had an immortality that most actors never experience thanks to Toy Story alone. He played Sid, the neighbor child who destroys toys, a character so distinctive and skillfully rendered that the movie became an enduring part of American childhood. He later co-starred with Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries. He provided the voice of Recess in several direct-to-video movies. He was a regular worker, which is extremely uncommon in the field of child actors.

Eventually, the camera was unable to locate him. He took a step back. Von Detten has discussed it in interviews over the years, implying that it was a conscious decision rather than an abrupt departure, but it’s still unclear why he had mostly left the entertainment business by the mid-2000s. It is said that he joined the precious metals trading firm Rosland Capital in 2018. Perhaps a pivot. or a sensible choice. It’s difficult to tell from the outside.

A lawsuit has been filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court regarding what transpired next. Sheila Greenberg, 85, and her husband Norman Greenberg, 97, claim in court documents that they saw a Rosland Capital television ad in 2020 that promoted gold as a secure way to safeguard retirement funds. They got in touch with the business. Von Detten was connected to them. They informed him that their retirement accounts held about $2 million. He said he could assist them.

According to the Greenbergs, they had little knowledge of gold. That particular detail is important. The lawsuit claims that they trusted Von Detten, trusted his expertise, and trusted his advice. On his advice, they bought more than $999,000 worth of Lady Liberty gold coins on October 19, 2020. They reportedly made a second purchase of more than $1.14 million three weeks later while they were still being contacted and urged to invest more. The couple claims to have spent over $2.1 million, or nearly all of their retirement funds, on gold coins that were about 60% more expensive than market value. They never received the coins at their house. Instead, the couple moved to a storage depository in Delaware while still making maintenance payments.

The lawsuit alleges fraud, misappropriation of assets, breach of fiduciary duty, and financial abuse of the elderly. The Greenbergs are requesting punitive damages in addition to about $900,000 in damages. In July 2026, roughly seven weeks after the lawsuit went public, Rosland Capital filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Rosland’s lawyers stated they were working with a liquidating trust to look into the company’s financial history, but they were unable to comment on the case directly.

Von Detten had not addressed the accusations in public at the time these reports surfaced.

Here, caution is advised. These are not convictions; they are accusations. The whole picture of this case hasn’t yet been revealed, and courts exist specifically to sort out what actually happened. However, the lawsuit does raise valid concerns about how precious metals companies market to senior citizens, concerns that transcend any one salesperson. The Greenbergs claim that it wasn’t until Sheila used an AI tool to look into the company’s operations in 2025 that they started to realize the true worth of their gold holdings.

The entire situation is subtly depressing; it’s not dramatic, just depressing. A late-night TV ad, a well-known name on a business proposal, two individuals in their 80s and 90s, and a choice that might have cost them everything they had saved. The court will decide whether Von Detten is legally liable. However, the incident serves as a reminder of how easily undeserved trust can turn into a liability.

Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
