Angel Reese WNBA Finals: How the Dream’s Most Polarizing Star Became Women’s Basketball’s Biggest Draw

About 42,000 people would probably disagree that anyone was caught off guard by this WNBA Finals. When tickets for Games 3 and 4 in Atlanta went on sale, there were reportedly that many fans in the online line. The Dream had to move their home games from the 3,500-seat Gateway Center Arena to the 17,000-seat State Farm Arena in order to accommodate the demand. Such a figure is not the result of chance. A single name is the source of much of it.

Angel Reese, a 24-year-old who won the 2026 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year award, is competing in her first Finals. Her team, the Atlanta Dream, advanced to this series against the Golden State Valkyries by sweeping the Washington Mystics and the New York Liberty. Throughout the playoffs, Reese has averaged 18 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. In Game 3 at Barclays Center, he finished the Liberty with 22 points. Those are good figures. The context surrounding them—the attention, the dispute, the group of people who genuinely can’t agree on what she is or what she means to this league—is what makes them intriguing.

The day before Game 1, Draymond Green used blunt language on his podcast that was worth repeating. He claimed that while a sizable portion of the audience is watching because they want Reese to succeed, an even larger portion is watching because they want her to fail. Then he basically said, “Both groups purchase tickets.” Although his observation is a little unsettling, it’s difficult to argue that he is incorrect. Compared to the 2024 Finals, which were already thought to be the most sought-after in league history, the demand for tickets for this series is 13% higher. Before the ball even went up, NBC sold out of its ad inventory for Games 1 and 4. The remaining games were moved by USA Network in the same manner. Reese is a factor in this, but she is not the only one.

Here, the Valkyries are more than just a setting; they play a real role. Golden State swept the reigning champion Las Vegas Aces in the semifinals after finishing the regular season with the second-best record in the league, 32-12. Over the course of two seasons, every home game has been sold out. During the regular season, their bench averaged 35.9 points per game, which is the kind of depth that wears down teams that depend on a short rotation. Additionally, they defeated the Dream in all three of their regular-season encounters. With home-court advantage at Chase Center, ESPN had them at more than 62% to win Game 1. Their star guard, Gabby Williams, is averaging 22.7 points in these playoffs, which is more than Reese. She made headlines when she stated outright that the media has never respected her and that she doesn’t think they will start now. Then, in its list of the top 15 Finals players, ESPN placed Williams second and Reese first. It’s unclear if a competitor thinks about that kind of thing before a championship series.

After defeating the Liberty in the semifinals, Reese made a simple statement. She claimed to have a sense of belonging. She expressed her desire to travel to Atlanta and assist the team in winning the entire tournament, not just the first round or the semifinals. She admitted that the work wasn’t finished. She seems to have been preparing for this exact moment ever since she assisted LSU in winning their first national championship in 2023. Helping a franchise win its first championship, for example, is the kind of thing that alters how a career is remembered. In their entire existence, the Dream has never taken home a championship. Reese is bringing that burden to Chase Center on Saturday.

The series is already producing something this league hasn’t always had: real, loud, undeniable interest, whether viewers are watching to see her win or secretly hoping she loses. The 42,000 people in that line, the full ad inventories, and the ticket prices all lead to the same conclusion. The finals have arrived. They contain Reese. The remainder will be resolved on the court.

She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
