In 2026, karate isn’t practiced in a single location. More than any one event, the fact that it is occurring everyplace speaks volumes about the current state of the sport.
National karate championships are either confirmed, in progress, or still pending in at least six nations. The dates span the entire year, from the Canadian winter to an unconfirmed Indian championship in December. It takes a little more than a single Google search to keep track of this expansive picture.
Let’s start with the US. The USA Karate National Championships and Junior Team Trials for 2026 will take place in Spokane, Washington, from July 16–19. Although Spokane isn’t the first city that springs to mind for a national sporting event, it makes sense to bring top-tier competition to a place that doesn’t typically receive much attention. The venue selection seems deliberate, expanding the sport’s reach instead of reusing the same large cities. It’s important to remember that 2027 already has a location: the Westgate Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Thus, in a way, Spokane is the more sedate year prior to the return to Nevada.
Canada’s 2026 nationals were divided into two seasons and two cities. Back in February, the Senior and Under-21 Championships took place in Halifax, Nova Scotia. A chilly crowd flocked to a hockey province for a martial arts competition, which has a certain allure. The Junior Championships took place in Edmonton, Alberta, in May. It’s a useful division that caters to various age groups without imposing a single timeline on everyone. It’s genuinely unclear if it gives the national program a sense of continuity or fragmentation.
Australia’s 2026 nationals will take place in Hobart, Tasmania, from July 10–12. Hobart’s population barely exceeds 240,000, making it a small city by any standards. However, the city has previously played host to major sporting events, and its location tends to draw attention. There’s no halfway showing up when you’re on an island at the bottom of Australia.
Interestingly, New Zealand is hosting two different national championships this year. While GKR Karate New Zealand planned its own event for October 18 at the Te Rauparaha Arena in Porirua, outside of Wellington, Karate New Zealand held its official nationals on August 29 at a location in St Johns, Auckland. The same nation, two events, two organizations. It brings up a subtle consolidation issue that the national federation most likely struggles with more than it talks about in public.
The most noteworthy historical addition to this list is England. The first-ever England Karate National Championships took place on September 20, 2026, at the University of Warwick’s Sports and Wellness Hub in Coventry. This moment seems to be more important than the date on the calendar indicates. It’s always more difficult to start something than to keep it going, and England Karate seems to be starting from scratch.

In India, the NKF National Karate Federation has announced that its fifth season of national championships will take place in December 2026. However, the location is still up for public vote. Kolkata, Uttarakhand, Delhi, and Punjab are all under consideration. It’s a unique approach to choose a host city for a national championship, and the ultimate choice may be influenced more by organizational and political dynamics within Indian karate than by practical considerations.
All of this contributes to a more comprehensive global picture. The World Cadet, Junior, and Under-21 Championships will take place in Bielsko-Biala, Poland, in October, and the Karate World Cup will take place in Hangzhou, China, in late November, according to the World Karate Federation’s complete 2026 schedule. In addition to pursuing domestic titles, athletes participating in these national competitions are setting records, gaining rankings, and presenting themselves for international selection.
Observing everything come together gives me the impression that karate is undergoing a quiet expansion. Steady but not loud or ostentatious. Elite martial arts competitions are becoming more popular in cities that don’t typically host them. Inaugural events are being held by new federations. Real-time structural analysis is being done by nations. The complete picture of 2026 karate is still being put together, which is probably why it’s important to pay attention.
