Was Hayden Panettiere Sick? What We Know About Her Health Before She Died at 36

When we already know a lot about a celebrity’s death, it hits us differently. It’s not just shock that makes us feel different. One of those people was Hayden Panettiere. She told us things in interviews, in quiet TV appearances in the morning, and finally in a book that came out a few months before she died. Still, it felt completely out of the blue when the news came out on August 16, 2026. Sixty-six. It’s been five days since her birthday.

Everyone wanted to know right away if Hayden Panettiere was sick. What really took place? The official reason for her death has not been made public yet. It turns out that police were called to what they called a “incident,” and they are now looking into it. TMZ said that Panettiere had been having back pain for the past year. No one has said yet if that had anything to do with what happened.

Another thing that made the story less clear was that she died in South Carolina. The day before she died, she flew out of Los Angeles with Brian Hickerson. In her autobiography, she wrote that Hickerson had been her on-and-off boyfriend and had abused her physically. He had been arrested for domestic violence, and in her book, she wrote about the relationship in a way that felt almost brave because the wounds were so public. That she was going on another trip with him is the kind of detail that sticks with you. There aren’t any clear answers to the questions it brings up right now.

Skip Panettiere, her father, told ABC News that she had died and called it a “tragic passing.” He said she was “an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy.” He asked to be left alone. That request seemed real and not like it had been practiced.

She had been honest about her problems for years. In a 2022 appearance on Good Morning America, she talked about her alcoholism and postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter Kaya, whom she had with heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko, whom she had been engaged to before the birth. At the time, she said, “I didn’t know where the alcoholism ended and the postpartum began.” She said, “I pretty much ran myself ragged.”That phrase keeps coming back to me now.

Then, in February 2023, her brother Jansen died suddenly at the age of 28. He had an enlarged heart and problems with his aortic valve. Hayden talked about his grief in an honest way, without trying to make it sound like something good. She told People magazine, “I will never be able to get over it.” “No matter how many years go by.” Those words didn’t say anything. She meant them.

This Is Me: A Reckoning, her autobiography that came out in May, talked about all of it: postpartum depression, addiction, domestic violence, trauma, and loss. It sounds more like a record than a book now. Hayden Panettiere was someone who was still trying to put herself back together when those pages were written. She was known to millions of people as Claire Bennet from Heroes and Juliette Barnes from Nashville.

Take a moment to think about that. The work was done by her. She had called things out and talked to them in public, but she was still moving forward. This Friday would have been her 37th birthday.

Born in Kansas City, Sierra Foster writes about politics and serves as Senior Editor at kbsd6.com. She was raised paying attention to this city, not just living in it. Sierra has a strong, deep connection to Kansas City, from the neighborhoods east of Troost to the discussions that take place in the city hall halls. Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
