Lundberg Jasmine White Rice Recall Expands — Here’s What’s Actually in Your Bag

Most people don’t look when a stack of two-pound bags falls off a grocery store shelf. After four months, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration changed how big the recall was from what it had said at first. Over 54,000 pounds of rice, or 27,324 packages, are now in it. They are spread out across twelve states. That’s not right at all. That’s a big addition to a recall that didn’t get enough attention.

It is Lundberg Family Farms White Rice Jasmine. The UPC code for it is 073416040281 and it comes in 32-ounce bags. There are two lots in question. The best-before date for 260201MA is February 1, 2027, and the best-before date for 260202MA is February 2, 2027. The rice was sold in stores in Washington, Wisconsin, Nevada, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont, and the United States. It was sold at Wegmans, Walmart, and Target. It wasn’t a small-batch item made in a small space. It was sold in some of the country’s biggest stores.

As the reason for the recall, it is said that foreign material might be present. People who keep up with news about food safety will understand how frustrating it is that the exact nature of that information has not been made public. In this case, things like stones, metal pieces, wood, or plastic are often the ones that get into grain while it is being harvested or processed. You can’t say how seriously to take the risk until you know more about it. The FDA has called this a Class II recall. This means that eating the recalled product might make you sick in the short term or in a way that can be fixed by medicine, but it probably won’t hurt you too badly. Even though that classification has less risk, it’s still not nothing.
The bags in question have “best-before” dates that go all the way through 2027, which makes this recall tricky. Rice doesn’t go bad right away. People forget about it for months after putting it in the back of a cabinet. A bag bought in the spring that is still in a pantry might not show any signs that something is wrong with it. A lot of people had some of those bags in their homes for a few months before the FDA update in August.

It is owned by Wehah Farms and is called Lundberg Family Farms. For many years, the brand has had a good name in the natural and organic food market. You can find their goods in both natural grocery stores and big-box stores. Still not sure how the contamination got into the supply chain, and the business hasn’t said in public what caused it. Most of the time, companies decide to recall their goods before the FDA makes them. So far, this looks like the right thing to do. However, that doesn’t make the contamination any less of a problem.

If someone has the bad rice at home, it’s easy to tell them not to eat it. Get rid of it. Wegmans has refunded everything that was bought in its stores. If someone bought the rice at a different store, they should call the store they bought it from to find out how to return it.

When everyday foods like rice are recalled, they don’t seem to get as much attention as when deli meat or leafy greens linked to an active outbreak are recalled. You can eat rice. Because it is dry and sealed, it stays fresh all the time. There is still a chance that 27,000 bags of a contaminated product are still in homes in 12 states, even though most of them probably look fine. This means that the assumption should be checked out.

She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
