When you think about it, Ralph Macchio was one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood in the 1980s and early 1990s. He still has a can of tuna from the set of My Cousin Vinny somewhere in his house. He’s not sure where it is. He knows he’s not going to open it, though. “Bought it in 1991, or whenever that was,” he joked on Live With Kelly & Mark not long ago. The tuna is older than most of the people who are asking about it online right now.
The movie My Cousin Vinny came out in 1992, but most of it was shot in 1991. Ralph Macchio was born on November 4, 1961. That means he was 29 years old when the movie was made and 30 years old when it came out in theaters. It’s important to note this because he played Bill Gambini on screen, a nervous, wide-eyed college student who steals a can of tuna by accident and gets caught up in a murder investigation in a small Alabama town. He read like he was younger. A lot younger. That pretty much sums it up.
Hollywood has a long history of actors playing roles ten years younger than they really are, but Macchio was in a different lane. His face looked like that of a boy without being too cartoonish or too anxious. In The Karate Kid, it worked when he was a teenager. In My Cousin Vinny, it still worked after almost ten years. People kept believing that he was young, so directors kept casting him.
The movie holds up in ways that don’t seem like they were meant to. Joe Pesci’s performance as the hopelessly inexperienced but determined Vinny Gambini is a mix of comedic timing and barely contained anger. Marisa Tomei won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Vinny’s fiancée, Mona Lisa Vito, who knows a lot about cars and saves the day. And Macchio as Bill was the movie’s emotional center. He was the one who the audience cared about and who kept getting deeper into a mess that began with a tuna can and a misunderstanding.

What’s easy to forget is how much of the movie’s charm comes from Macchio’s convincing panic. While Bill Gambini was 29 years old and had worked as an actor before, he needed to feel like a child who was lost. It’s not as easy as it looks to find that balance between adult skill and youthful energy. If they had cast someone who looked 19 instead, the movie might have felt lighter and less serious. Even though he played a naive man, Macchio gave the part a bit more of a lived-in feel.
He told PEOPLE at PaleyFest not long ago that he has talked to writers about the possibility of a sequel. Macchio gave it some thought and said it was about “finding the smart angle in.” Joe Pesci, who is 82 years old now, would have to be involved in some way, even if it was just a small way. It’s not clear if any of this will go forward, but the desire seems real. Macchio is used to going back to well-known roles. He played Daniel LaRusso for six seasons on Netflix’s Cobra Kai, a show that got great reviews before it ended in February.
At age 63, Macchio doesn’t seem to mind the attention that is paid to him about the past. He still drives the same old car from the first Karate Kid movie. The Outsiders didn’t get to see the Chuck Soles. He has the fish. There’s something cute about a man who keeps things that remind him of where he’s been, not as trophies but as personal items. Proof in a quiet way that the work was done and the years were real.
It sounds like a side note to ask how old Ralph Macchio was in My Cousin Vinny. But it does say something about what made the performance work and why people are still asking about it after more than 30 years.
