How Many People Missing in Nepal? The Answer Is Getting Harder to Track

Something feels off when you’re watching a disaster happen live and the numbers keep changing before you can keep up. Everyone is still wondering how many people are missing in Nepal four days after a Himalayan glacier near the border between Nepal and China broke off, forming a wall of water, mud, and broken rock that tore through river valleys. As of Sunday, August 30, 2026, the truth is that at least 2,498 people haven’t been found in Nepal alone. There are also 546 people missing in Tibet’s Gyirong County, which is across the border. The total number of deaths in the region is over 3,000, with more than 750 confirmed deaths.

It is hard to take in its size. It is now known that at least 734 people have died in Nepal. This number keeps going up every few hours. China said that 16 people had died, but as of Sunday morning local time, rescue teams had not found any more survivors. What happened to the hundreds of hydropower workers who were in tunnels when the floods happened is even less clear. Nepal’s Independent Power Producers’ Association says that 898 workers from different hydropower projects along the Trishuli River have still not been found. They have been drilling holes and pumping air into one tunnel in the hopes of finding anyone who is still alive inside. The Nepalese government thinks that more than 100 workers may still be alive but trapped under the rubble and mud.

The missing are not just ideas. Families on pilgrimages, workers building things in a river valley, and tourists who came to see the mountains but haven’t been seen or heard from since Wednesday morning. 589 of the 2,498 people who are missing in Nepal are not from the country. On the Tibetan side, 261 foreigners are missing. They are from 23 different countries, and 18 are Americans, 49 are Indian, 33 are Latvian, and 15 are British. Forty-two Australians have not been found yet, which is why Canberra promised $8 million in humanitarian aid and sent more crisis response staff to Kathmandu.

A big glacier near the Langtang Lirung peak broke off and fell into the river below, causing an avalanche and a landslide. This is something that stays with you. China said it only took six to seven minutes for the waterfall of ice, rock, and water to reach Gyirong Port on their side of the border. About six to seven minutes. In the words of one leader of a rescue team, that’s how long it took for an entire border checkpoint area to be “largely flattened” with no clear outline of any buildings left.

Possible that the final number of missing people will be different from what is being said right now. Some names on the first lists have since been checked and found to be safe. A five-year-old girl was pulled from the rubble and set up with her parents. An Australian hiker who had been reported missing was found and said that people in Nepal saved her life. These moments are important, even if they only show a small part of what’s going on. In some places, though, rescue teams are switching from active search to retrieval, which is a quiet sign that things are changing.

It’s hard to deal with the personal stories that are coming out. Sneha Sudhir’s husband Srinivas was hiking through Mount Kailash with nine other people. She told CNN that they hadn’t been heard from in over 80 hours. She said, “That’s a family out there.” “Everyone is a great human being, a great dad, a great husband.” In Brisbane, the head of the Nepalese Association of Queensland learned during the vigil that his cousin was one of the people who went missing. In Nepal’s Chitwan, families are gathering at temporary holding centers to watch screens that show photos of recovered victims. They are hoping not to recognize a face they know, but also, in a terrible way, hoping they do recognize a face because at least that would be an answer.

Aside from the sadness, the rescue operation faces real problems. Fire departments had to stay on high alert all day Sunday because the Bhote Koshi River was still high. A second lake was formed by a new landslide that happened downstream from the first disaster area. This meant that rescue workers near Gyirong Port had to be moved. Rain is still making things harder in many places. India and China sent tunnel rescue experts to Nepal on Saturday. The government has already drilled several holes to try to reach workers who are trapped, but the rock is too hard to break through.

Nepal’s Prime Minister told the world to pay attention to climate change and used the melting glacier as an example of what can happen when mountain ice melts faster. It seems likely that this disaster will keep people talking about that for a while, which is good. The Himalayas are warming up faster than the rest of the world. For years, people in the area have known that glacial lake outburst floods are a real danger that is getting worse. It wasn’t completely clear what would happen near Langtang Lirung. Given how quickly the cascade happened, it’s still not clear if better early warning systems would have made a difference. But that question will be asked.

The search goes on for now. They are drilling for rescue teams. Families are ready to go. As of now, more than 2,500 people are still missing in Nepal. This is one of the highest numbers of disaster searchers seen in the area in years.

Sierra has a strong, deep connection to Kansas City, from the neighborhoods east of Troost to the discussions that take place in the city hall halls. Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
