Elizabeth Berkley in Cobra Kai: The Surprise Cameo Nobody Saw Coming

Something quietly satisfying about a show that knows how to please its viewers without making a big deal out of it. When a familiar face pops up when you least expect it, Cobra Kai has always been good at that. They let the scene breathe instead of turning it into a parade of memories. And that’s exactly what the last few episodes of Season 6 do. Elizabeth Berkley is at the center of it all.

Berkley plays Moon’s mother Winnie in “Rattled,” the second episode of Part 3. The show had hinted at Winnie’s existence in previous seasons without ever actually showing her. She is friendly and a little strange. She is very interested in reiki and tarot, and she is really interested in Japanese culture. Daniel and Amanda LaRusso, who are always trying to make connections, think she’d be a good match for Chozen. Chozen, on the other hand, is very not sure.

The next scene is one of those that works not because of any dramatic tension but because of the strange little details that the writers put in it. Winnie starts giving reiki treatments and thinking about spiritual things, and Chozen looks like a man who is quietly planning his escape. After that, Storage Wars happens. It turns out that they are both big fans. The room feels warmer because everyone is interested in the same thing. It doesn’t turn into a relationship, but something real does happen. That’s more difficult to write.

In interviews, co-creator Jon Hurwitz said that Berkley had been near the top of their list of actors to cast from the moment they thought of the scene. The episode’s director, Billy Zabka, saw the short list and picked her name right away. Someone said that this sounded like one of those casting calls where everyone agreed before the call was over. With Berkley’s help, the answer came quickly because she liked the show.

The scene was shot at a winery outside of Atlanta on the last day of filming for both Ralph Macchio and Courtney Henggeler. All reports say it had the loose, happy vibe that you usually get at the end of a long production run. Cast and crew were drifting in to watch, and the mood was more relaxed than tense. Hurwitz said that when Berkley got there, he just fit right in. It seemed like she and Yuji Okumoto had a natural connection, which is more important than it might seem for a scene that could have felt like a stunt.

As it turns out, the Storage Wars detail came from the writers’ own viewing habits. Josh Heald said that he and Hurwitz used to watch the show together. Heald said that they wrote Winnie’s lines so precisely—having her casually mention storage auction legend Darrell Sheets—that part of the fun was picturing Sheets himself finding the episode one day. There are jokes like this in the writers’ room that make it to the screen and land.

This is a small but important part of Berkley’s career, which has been more varied than most people remember. That’s still what most people think of when they hear her name. Next comes Showgirls, and then maybe her return to the Peacock reboot of Saved by the Bell in 2020. But she’s been steadily working in TV, theater, and movies for decades, with roles in CSI: Miami, The L Word, and an Off-Broadway run of the critically acclaimed play Hurlyburly, based on the best-selling book of the same name. There was always a range. Cobra Kai just gave her a winery, a wardrobe for spiritual wanderers, and a scene partner who is also wary of tarot cards.

It’s still not a big part. But small parts that are played well are often the ones that people talk about long after the movie is over. This one seems like it will stick with fans, not because of what it was, but because of how well it fit into the world the show created.

Sierra has a strong, deep connection to Kansas City, from the neighborhoods east of Troost to the discussions that take place in the city hall halls. Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
