Who Is More Skilled, Miguel or Robby? Cobra Kai’s Greatest Debate Finally Gets an Honest Answer

There aren’t many arguments in the Cobra Kai fandom that have lasted as long or been as intense as this one. Robby or Miguel. El Serpiente or the Karate King, Diaz or Keene. It’s the kind of debate that dominates late-night comment sections and most likely never ends, which speaks to how skillfully the show handled both of them.

One version of this argument ought to be straightforward. More victories go to one fighter. One fighter appears to be more skilled. One has hardware for a tournament. However, if one takes the show seriously, it becomes evident that framing it that way completely misses the point. Because these two are not identical, using the same ruler to measure them consistently results in incorrect conclusions.

Start with Robby’s contributions. Most honest evaluations indicate that he is the more innately talented of the two. He had no formal training, joined karate late, and picked it up at an almost unsettling rate. In a matter of weeks, he mastered the crane kick, a move Daniel LaRusso himself had not yet perfected. His footwork is accurate, his movement fluid, and when he is emotionally stable and locked in, he is truly challenging to defeat.

The most obvious example is probably the apartment fight from Season 5, which featured two fighters at nearly their best, no significant outside distractions, and a vicious, evenly matched fight that Miguel barely prevailed in. Robby should be taken seriously as a top-tier fighter just based on that fight.

However, Robby’s issue cannot be resolved by skill alone. Miguel just isn’t as inconsistent as he is. His complicated relationship with Johnny, his erratic relationship with Tory, and his fluctuating sense of loyalty between dojos are just a few examples of the emotional weight of his life that permeates his fighting in ways he has never fully learned to compartmentalize. The best illustration of this is the All-Valley Season 4 final. He was skilled enough to prevail. In any case, he lost. It wasn’t because the other fighter was superior that day, but rather because he was being pulled in a different direction by something in his mind.

Miguel, on the other hand, has a different mental makeup. The showrunners themselves admitted this, pointing out that Miguel has an advantage due to his mindset even though both fighters have similar raw skill. That’s the entire point of contention, not just a small disclaimer. Fighting has never been just about who has the best technique, whether you’re watching the real thing or a Netflix series about karate. Many skilled fighters have lost to less athletic opponents just because one of them was more focused during the fight.

The fact that Miguel’s advantages are not derived from natural gifts like Robby’s is what makes the comparison truly intriguing. He wasn’t exceptionally talented. Throughout the first few months of training, Johnny had to essentially intimidate him, and even then, his advancement was earned rather than accidental.

He developed a foundation of aggression, resilience, and an almost instinctive understanding of how fights unfold through Cobra Kai. Among the teenage fighters in the entire show, he may have the best battle IQ because he can read opponents, predict their movements, and change tactics in the middle of a fight.

It’s possible that both fans are correct about different things, and this is something to consider for a little while. In terms of pure athletic ability, Robby might be the more gifted fighter. Most of the time, the choreography supports this. He moves in a way that suggests he was destined for this. Miguel appears to have made the decision to excel at this and then used perseverance and repetition to will it into reality. Watching one of those things is more impressive. The other usually prevails more frequently.

As is always the case with these two, the captain fight in Season 6 Part 1 complicated matters once more. Robby prevailed. He overcame an early deficit and decisively won the game. That matters. However, the Sekai Taikai came next, and while Robby battled the demands of being captain and everything else going on in his personal life, Miguel subtly emerged as the Miyagi-Do team’s mainstay, carrying rounds, managing stressful situations, and acting like someone who had been waiting for a stage that size.

It seems as though Cobra Kai always meant for these two to circle one another without one eventually surpassing the other. They were created by the authors to be counterparts, and each time one advances, the narrative finds a way to bring the balance back. That writing isn’t lazy; rather, it accurately captures the nature of elite competition. In any sport, the fighters at the top trade victories based on preparation, focus, and conditions rather than a fixed hierarchy.

The more truthful response, however, is that Miguel is the superior fighter in actual competitive situations. Fighting is not a talent show, even though Robby may have more natural talent. Who shows up on the day is the test. Miguel usually shows up.

She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
