A picture. That’s how it began. Co-creator Jon Hurwitz of Cobra Kai shared a picture of himself sitting across from Yuji Okumoto, who portrayed Chozen in the series, and William Zabka, who is actually Johnny Lawrence, on social media earlier this month. There was no caption describing their actions. There is no announcement included. There were just three men in the room with a common past and the internet to fill in the details.

Fans began chatting right away. They haven’t truly ceased.
When Season 6 Part 3 of Cobra Kai debuted on Netflix in February 2025, the show’s main run came to an end. The main arcs were resolved in a way that satisfied the majority of devoted viewers, and the conclusion was generally well received. Johnny Lawrence received his atonement. The dojos reconciled. The children grew up. It was a satisfying conclusion for a show that began as a sentimental follow-up to a thirty-year-old film and managed to develop into a truly captivating television program. And yet, almost two years later, the discussion about what will happen next is still going strong.
Hurwitz has acknowledged that he has been actively working on spin-off concepts for what they refer to as the Miyagiverse with fellow creators Josh Heald and Hayden Schlossberg. It’s important to make it clear that nothing has been officially approved, as the internet frequently outpaces reality in this regard. However, the work is being done. Additionally, Ralph Macchio has stated that the spin-off is still in the early stages of development, which is somewhat more significant than a mysterious Instagram post.
It helps that the concepts being discussed are actually fascinating. The most talked-about is a Mr. Miyagi prequel, which would go back in time and examine the character’s experiences during the war, his time in Okinawa, and the backstory that Cobra Kai Season 6 only touched the surface of. It’s easy to understand why there’s such a strong desire for that one. Miyagi has always served as the moral focal point of the entire universe, and the notion of constructing an entire narrative around his upbringing is intriguing. Additionally, it would be completely independent of the teenage drama that split fans in the later seasons.
After Hawk and Demetri at Caltech, Binary Bros. is a planned karate-comedy college spin-off. In the right hands, the lighter premise—which is obviously targeted at a younger audience—might succeed. It remains to be seen if it has the same impact as the original program. Last year, Daniel LaRusso and Jackie Chan’s Mr. Han joined forces to train a new generation in Karate Kid: Legends, the franchise’s film adaptation. The success and reception of that movie will probably determine how vigorously Netflix pursues any television sequels.
As you watch all of this happen, you get the impression that the creative team truly thinks there are more stories to be told here and that they aren’t just working for a paycheck. The writers appear to have been working on the Miyagi prequel in particular for some time. It’s still unclear if Netflix concurs. Despite being adored, Cobra Kai was never a top-ten phenomenon in its last seasons, and streaming services have grown more wary of costly franchise expansions that don’t produce instant audience numbers.
