Alicia Hannah-Kim Cobra Kai: The Role That Changed Everything

The way Alicia Hannah-Kim entered the Cobra Kai universe is subtly amazing. She just showed up in Season 5 as sensei Kim Da-Eun and made the kind of impression that viewers are still talking about, without any fanfare or long build-up. That was a big deal for a show that had built its mythology around a few well-known characters over the course of four seasons.

The timing of her story is what makes it intriguing. Hannah-Kim has been candid about the fact that when the Cobra Kai opportunity presented itself, she was thinking about giving up acting completely. She was exhausted from years of auditions, rejections, and the kind of quiet loneliness that actors in the business seldom acknowledge. Then, in an almost ridiculous move, she secured two TV parts on the same day: a recurring role on HBO Max’s Minx and Kim Da-Eun on Cobra Kai. She was debating whether or not to go on one day. The next, two networks were negotiating her schedule.

Perhaps the timing influenced the way she performed the part. Her performance has a sense of groundedness that isn’t often found in performers who have had an easy ascent. You usually approach the door in a different way after spending actual time outside wondering if it will ever open.

Hannah-Kim was born to Korean parents in Sydney, Australia, and trained at the Australian Theater for Young People before entering the American television industry. She had made appearances in a number of projects, including General Hospital and Grey’s Anatomy, but none of them were particularly noteworthy. Kim Da-Eun’s involvement altered the situation. Not only does Cobra Kai have a huge worldwide viewership—people from Saudi Arabia, Brazil, India, and Pakistan have all watched the show—but the character itself had significance. The first female sensei in the Cobra Kai series is Kim Da-Eun. That is not an insignificant detail.

It had real significance for Hannah-Kim. She recounts how, as a child in Australia, she looked at the TV and saw no Asian faces reflected back at her. She had Sandra Oh, Michelle Yeoh, and Lucy Liu in international films, but she had very little local representation. It felt like she had finally reached her long-held goal when she landed a role where young girls could see someone who looked like them—martial arts trained, strong, and commanding.

The role had actual physical demands. Hannah-Kim has been open about how much she truly enjoys that aspect of her work, and Cobra Kai is not a show that takes its fight choreography lightly. Her enthusiastic descriptions of the stunt training, the gym sessions with the other actors, and the rush of hearing “action” during a fight sequence imply that it was more than just her job. She discovered that she was skilled at it and wanted to improve.

2025 brought her into an uncomfortable spotlight off-screen. She told police that co-star Martin Kove bit her on the arm during a meet-and-greet at a fan convention in Puyallup, Washington, hard enough to leave visible marks and bruises. Later, Kove apologized, admitting that he had overreached himself. Hannah-Kim gave a measured response. She publicly urged viewers not to let the incident affect their opinions of the show itself and decided not to file charges. It was the kind of poise that said a lot about her in the given situation.

In 2014, she married actor Sebastian Roché in France. She has almost 500,000 Instagram followers, and her warmth and sense of humor come across as real rather than staged. She shares behind-the-scenes photos, birthday tributes, and workout videos with the carefree ease of someone who has figured out how to be a public figure without turning into a performer.

Hannah-Kim’s career has taken a turn that would have seemed improbable only a few years ago, with Cobra Kai now finished and a new Korean spy drama, Tempest, in the works alongside John Cho. The specifics of her upcoming chapter are still unknown. However, it seems like she’s just getting started based on how she’s handled everything, including the late breakthrough, the ground-breaking role, and the public incident handled with quiet dignity.

Sierra has a strong, deep connection to Kansas City, from the neighborhoods east of Troost to the discussions that take place in the city hall halls. Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
