Is Karate Kid: Legends a Hit? The Box Office Numbers Tell a Complicated Story

On May 30, 2025, Karate Kid: Legends debuted, competing with Lilo & Stitch and Mission: The neighborhood of Impossible: The Final Reckoning is not the best place for a nostalgic franchise revival with a PG-13 rating. It debuted at $20 million domestically, came in third for the weekend, and provoked the kind of discussion that usually follows movies that don’t have enough impact to make people stop talking. Was it a success? The truth is that it depends on your interpretation of the word.

The financial case is actually conflicting on paper. With Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio sharing the screen, the film’s $45 million budget was modest for a franchise picture. In the end, it made about $117 million worldwide, with roughly $52.5 million coming from North America and $64.5 million from overseas markets. A film at this budget level needs between $100 and $112 million just to break even after accounting for marketing and distribution expenses, though film accounting is never flawless. Legends barely made it there. Although it made money, it wasn’t enough to give studio executives the confidence to announce sequels over lunch.

That number makes more sense when compared to the rest of the franchise. In 1984 dollars, the original 1984 movie made roughly $90 million just domestically. The 2010 version starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith earned $351 million worldwide. Legends appears to be a smaller result when compared to those benchmarks. It appears much healthier than the franchise’s worst-performing film, The Next Karate Kid, which only made $15 million worldwide. Because it is in the middle, it is frequently overlooked in Hollywood because it is neither successful enough to create genuine momentum nor successful enough to be deemed a disaster.

The discrepancy between reviewers and viewers is what makes this movie’s reception truly intriguing. While audience ratings range from 91 to 92 percent, with an A-minus CinemaScore from opening weekend audiences, it is rated between 58 and 59 percent by reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes, which is technically a failing grade on that platform’s binary scale.

It’s an exceptionally large split. Such numbers are typically indicative of films that were produced for a particular audience that did not include critics, which is likely the case in this instance. Those who watched Cobra Kai from 2018 to 2025 and grew up with Daniel LaRusso reacted when they saw Macchio and Chan sharing a scene for the first time. With varying expectations, critics discovered a movie that relied too heavily on well-known beats and gave its iconic characters insufficient screen time.

The critique regarding runtime and structure might be valid. For a franchise crossover balancing two distinct movie universes, the film’s 94-minute runtime feels condensed. Many people have expressed their desire for twenty more minutes in Reddit threads and fan forums. They want more time with Han and LaRusso together, more development for Li Fong, the new lead, and more breathing room overall. There is a version of this movie that allows the two mentors to share a room for a longer period of time, and it’s difficult not to wonder how that version would have performed at the box office.

The actor who portrays Li Fong, Ben Wang, emerges from this with his reputation unharmed. If Sony decides to continue the franchise, there is enough warmth in the character and his performance reads well physically. It’s still unclear if that occurs. There has been no announcement of a sequel, and the film’s release on streaming services will subtly impact that discussion in ways that box office receipts alone are unable to.

As you watch everything unfold, you get the impression that Karate Kid: Legends came at a strange time. Cobra Kai had just wrapped up a six-season run that had significantly increased the franchise’s fan base and enhanced its mythology. Without the Cobra Kai characters that audiences had invested years in, the movie might have suffered in ways that are difficult to quantify right after that conclusion. It’s obvious that the franchise has potential. It’s still debatable if Legends was the best course of action or simply the one that was available.
