Sara Bejlek Cincinnati Tennis Open 2026: How a Young Czech Is Turning Heads in Mason

Some players don’t make noise unless they have to. The young Czech tennis player Sara Bejlek looks like one of them. She isn’t giving speeches or making dramatic moves at the 2026 Cincinnati Open. People who matter are beginning to notice that she keeps winning matches.

Bejlek beat 16th-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 on Tuesday nite at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio. She moved on to the Round of 16. It’s not just the score that’s interesting; it’s also how she got there. She lost the first set, took whatever Alexandrova threw at her, and then over the next two sets, she took apart the Russian’s game piece by piece, winning 12 of the last 15 games. To make that kind of turnabout, you need more than talent. You need to be steady, which is something you don’t always see in younger players on the big stage.

The win sets up a match between Bejlek and top seed Aryna Sabalenka that could be the most interesting of the next round. At first glance, this matchup seems unfair. Sabalenka easily beat Xinyu Wang 6-1, 6-3 earlier on Tuesday nite. She lost only one point on second serve the whole match. She looked bossy, the kind of bossy that you don’t like seeing if you’re her opponent. Sabalenka’s win was also her 45th trip to a WTA 1000 Round of 16, breaking Karolina Pliskova’s record of 44. She is now the active player with the most trips to this point. It looks like this woman knows what she’s doing at this tournament.

However. Something about Bejlek’s week makes you want to pay close attention. It’s not easy to beat a ranked player after losing the first set. It takes a mental and physical reset that players with years of experience learn over and over again. Bejlek did it at Tony Trabert Stadium, and she didn’t look scared or tired while she did it. It’s not clear if that’s true against Sabalenka, but it’s a question that should be asked.

In August, Cincinnati has a certain vibe. The heat makes everything flat, the courts play quickly, and the crowd at Lindner Family Tennis Center reacts with real energy when the momentum changes. Without a doubt, it’s one of the better WTA 1000 stops because it doesn’t feel empty. This is where matches tend to breathe. Things get upset. There have already been a lot of them in the 2026 draw. For example, American Brandon Nakashima saved three match points to beat former champion Daniil Medvedev, and Coco Gauff had to come back from behind to beat Ann Li 6-1, 7-6. There is no peace in the tournament for anyone.

The fact that Bejlek has been in that situation and performed in that way shows that she is not overwhelmed by it. That’s more important than most people think. Although many people with good groundstrokes may be able to serve, move, and make decisions under pressure at a major WTA event, this is not always the case.

It’s still not clear if Bejlek has enough power to even reach Sabalenka, let alone beat her. This is a different level for Sabalenka, and her play on Tuesday showed that she’s reached her peak at the right time in the tournament. But Bejlek has already done better than everyone thought she would this week. It was quiet when she came in, and she’s played like she belongs. At the very least, that is something to keep an eye on when these two play in the Round of 16.

Sierra has a strong, deep connection to Kansas City, from the neighborhoods east of Troost to the discussions that take place in the city hall halls. Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
