Marie Bouzková Cincinnati Open 2026: How the Czech Veteran Refused to Lose

Some players win matches the hard way, like when they’re down a break and need to win the set while keeping their cool. Marie Bouzková is a player like that. The Czech No. 22 seed gave the crowd exactly what they came for on Tuesday nite in Cincinnati. She came back from being down a break in both sets to beat the 13th-seeded American teenager Iva Jovic, 7-6(0), 7-6(5), in a match that felt like it went on for two hours and twenty minutes.

Tennis wasn’t fun; it was tough. The kind where neither player is in charge and one of them just figures out a way to win. That player was Bouzková.

The story was told in small pieces in the first set. Jovic broke early and went ahead 5–3. She looked calm and hit the ball cleanly, and the crowd at the Western & Southern Open was slowly moving toward her. After that, Bouzková just got better at playing. Then she fought back, tied the set, and won the tiebreak without losing a single point. A tiebreak of 7–0. Something like that doesn’t just happen. It seems like Jovic, despite how good she is, wasn’t quite ready for how calm the Czech would stay under that much stress.

The second group stuck to a similar, almost stubborn script. The set was on Jovic’s serve, and he broke to go ahead 5-4. The match looked like it was about to really get going. Bouzková fought back right away. Not in a hurry. Not really badly. It was just clean, like the moment didn’t matter. She won the tiebreak in the second set 7–5, and that was it.

Five times, each player broke serve. There’s a bit of chaos in that stat, but the scoreline shows who was better at dealing with chaos.

The situation makes this win important to look at. It was Bouzková’s 21st win on the WTA Tour over a Top 20 player, which shows how consistent she is but doesn’t get enough credit for. But it was her first win of that kind in 2026; she had tried five times this year but failed against Top 20 players. It’s important that the drought ends here in Cincinnati, against a player that the tennis world is getting more and more excited about. Before Tuesday, her last win in the top 20 was at the 2025 Monterrey Open, against Beatriz Haddad Maia. After a long wait, the match ended in two tiebreaks.

It’s important to note that Bouzková has lived in Cincinnati before. She had been to the tournament five times in the main draw. In 2023, she made it to the quarterfinals, which was her best run. It’s clear that she likes something about this city, this court, or the way this tournament flows. It’s still not clear if that familiarity will lead to another deep run, but she has earned the right to find out.

It will be No. 4 seed Coco Gauff who plays her next. On Tuesday, Gauff easily beat Ann Li 6-1, 7-6(3). Gauff is currently playing some of the most consistent tennis of any player in the draw. Still, Bouzková has won both of their previous matches. Gauff had to retire in Cincinnati in 2022, but she beat her there. Then she beat her again in Rome in 2023. Gauff got back at him last year at the French Open. This isn’t just a mistake, then. Some might say that Gauff is the clear favorite right now, but Bouzková has already shown twice that she can beat the American.

As I watched this happen on Tuesday, it wasn’t brilliance that stood out; it was steadiness. Bouzková doesn’t shine. It takes a while for the scoreboard to catch up to her, but she stays in the point and the match. It’s still not clear if that’s enough to catch Gauff. It’s good.

Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
