NBA Topps Chrome Update Is Here — And It’s the Most Exciting Basketball Card Release of the Year

An exciting feeling spreads thru the collecting community every time a new Topps Chrome set comes out. People start to refresh their feeds. It’s loud in group chats. There are pull videos out there before the boxes have even had a chance to cool down from shipping. Right now, the 2025–26 Topps Chrome Updates Basketball is having that effect, and it’s not hard to see why.

This set is based on NBA Debut Patch Autographs, which have never been seen before in basketball collecting. Rookie Debut Patch Autographs from other sports have been made by Topps, and they have become some of the most emotional cards in the hobby. It’s as close to a time capsule as cardboard can get when a player signs a patch from their first professional game. NBA players are now a part of that story for the first time. And the timing seems almost planned, since this rookie class is one of the best in years.

Cooper Flagg starts the talk, just like he has all season. Cards like his one-of-one SuperFractor and his Debut Patch Autograph are framed instead of put in a sleeve. Dylan Harper’s Black parallel, of which there are only ten copies, has the same weight. The third figure, Kon Knueppel, is the one that most people will be chasing the hardest. He has quietly built up a strong following of collectors. It seems like this freshman class—the players, the photographers, and the rarity—came together in a way that doesn’t happen every year.

New in-game photos were used to make the 200-card base set, which is more important than it might sound. Different jerseys, Statement editions, and City uniforms give the set a look that is both new and old at the same time. The way Victor Wembanyama’s Hobby base card is framed has already gotten a lot of attention. That card is present even tho it doesn’t have a number on it.

This release has a lot of different types of cards for collectors who like inserts and short prints. Alternative Egos is a 10-card artist-driven subset that focuses on personality. Kevin Durant’s Slim Reaper card and Flagg’s Maine Event design both fit in well with this theme. The Minions crossover SSP is harder to put into a category because it’s somewhere between being new and actually being desirable. However, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s SuperFractor version will probably settle that debate quickly. Moment in Time is a new addition that is worth watching. It remembers certain events on the court, like Stephen Curry’s “Ring Me Up” celebration, in a way that feels thoughtful rather than just decorative.

Radiating Rookies is back with a checklist focused on the new class, and Rookie Autographs Lava Lamp adds what might be the release’s most visually unique subset—the smoothly shifting color effect in Chrome is said to look even better in real life. Fanatical, which is only sold in stores, puts LeBron James, Cade Cunningham, and a number of other top rookies in a format that is easier for more people to get to without feeling like an afterthought. Adding legends like Hakeem Olajuwon and Allen Iverson to the modern checklist, the 1980-81 Topps Basketball Autographs throwback insert gives the set a new kind of appeal.

As is always the case at the start of a release cycle, it’s still not clear which boxes will give which hits and how often. But the way this set was put together—the first time in history that Debut Patch Autographs were included, the depth of the rookie content, and the variety of inserts—makes it seem like Topps knew what collectors wanted. It depends on how the market moves whether that means long-term value or short-term fun. The energy feels real for now.

Sierra has a strong, deep connection to Kansas City, from the neighborhoods east of Troost to the discussions that take place in the city hall halls. Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
