Warning: This post contains spoilers for The Girlfriend.

The way loyalty, trust, and manipulation are portrayed in contemporary thrillers was drastically altered by The Girlfriend’s ending. Though remarkably different in execution from Michelle Frances’s novel, the Prime Video series left viewers wondering not only who made it out alive but also who they could trust. A terrible tug-of-war between Daniel’s dangerously alluring partner Cherry and his fiercely protective mother Laura ensnared the troubled medical student.

From the beginning, it was very evident that Laura was determined to show Cherry’s shortcomings. She broke off the relationship by lying, spying, and even fabricating Daniel’s death. Even though these actions were severe, they demonstrated a grieving mother’s incapacity to let go and her love being drastically diminished. However, her behavior also echoed that of other domineering matriarchs in television history, such as Celeste Wright’s mother-in-law in Big Little Lies and Norma Bates in Bates Motel. Her protectiveness was more than just a maternal instinct; it turned into an obsession that ruled her life.

Cherry, on the other hand, could play a variety of roles depending on the situation. She was protective of Daniel, defiant of Laura, and secretly guarded by her family. She reminded me a lot of other complex female antiheroes, such as Amy Dunne from Gone Girl, with her violent outbursts and suspicious past. In contrast to Amy, who used narrative control as a weapon, Cherry flourished in ambiguity. Through her survival, marriage to Daniel, and pregnancy preparation, she demonstrated her extraordinary ability to navigate chaos and transform suspicion into victory.

A shocking and inevitable climax was provided by Laura and Cherry’s fatal confrontation by the pool. Although intoxicated, Daniel intervened as Laura lunged with a knife. He drowned his mother while attempting to restrain her, turning from a passive witness to an active player in the breakdown of the family. As a hauntingly poetic symmetry, the scene reverberated as a symbolic inversion: the mother who had once told Cherry that her son had “died” now died at his hands.

A year after Laura passed away, the story took a leap forward, revealing Daniel and Cherry’s happy marriage, Cherry’s pregnancy, and Howard’s assimilation into their home life. The change initially seemed to indicate closure, a markedly better level of stability for Daniel following years of strife. However, the last turn upended this serenity. Daniel heard Tracey Laine warn that Cherry would eventually demand something he couldn’t provide and then figure out a way to take him away after finding Laura’s hidden phone. The revelation left viewers with an incredibly long-lasting cliffhanger as it broke the illusion of peace.

Additionally, this conclusion reflected broader cultural discussions. Dramas have favored complexity over tidy resolutions in recent years, tending toward morally dubious endings. The Girlfriend concluded in suspense, with Daniel’s fate hanging in the balance. This was similar to Tony Soprano’s final cut-to-black or Breaking Bad’s blend of closure and consequence. It felt both intensely personal and universally relatable. In terms of both design and delivery, the show’s finale was especially inventive since it capitalized on societal concerns about toxic relationships, family loyalty, and the hazy boundary between love and control.

The finale highlighted the cast’s remarkable range. Robin Wright’s portrayal of Laura was both empathetic and terrifying; it incorporated genuine maternal desperation while drawing from her previous experience in House of Cards. After starring in films such as House of the Dragon, Olivia Cooke demonstrated her ability to portray complex women with unreadable intentions. The gradual unraveling of Daniel’s arc, which Laurie Davidson portrayed with quiet intensity, culminated in a tragic violent moment that viewers found both horrifying and oddly inevitable.

The series’ influence on the industry has been just as noteworthy. Producers followed the trend of giving well-known stories new twists by adapting the book but changing the ending, just as Game of Thrones once departed from George R.R. Martin’s books. This strategy not only reignited interest in the original work but also laid the groundwork for potential follow-up seasons, with Daniel’s developing phobia of Cherry providing a rich source of material for future research.

In terms of society, The Girlfriend brought to light how love can turn into power and how families can tear apart under stress. The dangers of relationships where charm hides violence were highlighted by Cherry’s manipulations, while Laura’s inability to let go of her son reflected innumerable real-life stories of parents holding on too tightly. The show inspired discussions about trust, self-reliance, and the effects of unbalanced love among many viewers.
