DeepSeek Investment Round Suspended After Founder’s Private Comments Go Viral

Being honest costs more than keeping quiet in some situations. A billionaire founder of DeepSeek named Liang Wenfeng had some honest things said in private meetings with investors that have now stopped one of the most anticipated funding rounds in Chinese tech history.

DeepSeek told potential investors over the phone at the end of July 2026 that they would not be signing investment agreements as planned. There was no formal statement or press release; just word that the deal was on hold. People who know about the situation say that Liang was suspended a few days after comments he made went viral on Chinese social media and news sites, such as Yicai.

The comments were shocking because they were so honest. Liang is said to have told investors that China is still not as advanced in AI as the US and that DeepSeek still relies heavily on Nvidia chips, even though US export controls are trying to make it harder to get that kind of hardware. On the inside, a lot of people in the business probably think the same thing. It’s a whole different thing to say it out loud in a room full of investors and have it get out.

Things got more complicated because of the time. Tencent and CATL were among the big names that helped DeepSeek raise $7 billion in its first funding round in June. For this follow-on round, the company was expected to be worth around $71 billion, or 480 billion yuan. This would have been one of the highest pre-money values ever given to a Chinese AI company. There were only a few weeks left until what seemed like a done deal, but Liang’s words that got out hurt more than just business.

China’s government has put a lot of money and energy into the idea that its AI industry has reached the same level as Silicon Valley. DeepSeek became a symbol of this story in early 2026, when its successful models led to a flood of news stories about how Chinese AI was catching up to and maybe even beating American labs. At this point in time, it wouldn’t be a good idea for the company’s founder to walk into an investor meeting and quietly say that the gap is still there and that Nvidia dependency hasn’t been fixed. It seems like Liang knew right away that the leak was a bigger problem than just the deal being late.

It’s still not clear if the suspension is only temporary or if it means something more serious. Bloomberg said that things are still changing and that DeepSeek could start the process again once things calm down. That’s possible. A company that has raised $7 billion and is worth more than $70 billion doesn’t go away because of a rough week. But investors who were ready to sign agreements are now waiting, which is a bad feeling for everyone, especially when it comes to something this big.

What the episode shows, maybe more clearly than any earnings report, is how weak the story about Chinese AI is still. The story of how DeepSeek closed the gap was always a mix of facts and guesses, which is the kind of confidence that is needed for fundraising rounds. Liang’s comments that got out didn’t make a problem. They named one that was already there. It looks like the anger wasn’t about being wrong. It had to do with being heard.

Aside from the news, DeepSeek is also said to be in early talks about a possible IPO on Shanghai’s STAR Market. Because of the longer-term goal, this pause feels more like a setback than a collapse. It feels like the company is dealing with a tough time without changing its direction. Even so, it’s hard not to notice that Liang Wenfeng may not have released a new model in 2026, which was the most important thing he did. It was being honest with investors.
