Alex Eala Just Made History in Washington — and She’s Only 21

We didn’t plan for the final to go this way. Many people thought Jessica Pegula would win the match against a 21-year-old who had never won a WTA title before. She had won the first set and was serving for the second. It started to rain. A delay of five hours. The game was moved to Monday. Something had changed at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Washington when the games started up again.

The second set was won by Alex Eala 6-4. After that, she beat him 6-0 in the third set. It was the first time in history that a Filipino woman won a WTA singles title. She fell to the court as a mostly Filipino crowd inside the stadium made noise that everyone could hear.

There was no easy draw or lucky bracket in this one. To win this week in Washington, D.C., Eala had to beat Qinwen Zheng, who is the current Olympic champion. Then there was Leylah Fernandez, who was defending her title in DC. Then Elina Svitolina, who had just won a WTA 1000 match. Next up was Naomi Osaka, who has won four Grand Slams. Then came Pegula, who was ranked third in the world and the top seed. There are five players, and each one has a chance to win the tournament every week. One online observer said there were no skips. Five straight wins against the kind of teams that most players spend their whole careers trying to avoid in the same draw.

Eala is 21 years old. She first played tennis when she was four years old. She now lives and trains at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, Spain, which is far from Manila and the Filipinos who came to Washington, D.C., to see her play. Nadal was one of the first people to congratulate her after the match. He wrote on X that the trophy was “a well-deserved reward for all the hard work.” It’s kind of satisfying to see the student win in a city she had never been to before, while the teacher watches from across the ocean.

Joan Bosch, her coach, has been called her “confidant” in recent news stories. As I watched them hug after scoring the championship point, it didn’t feel like a professional relationship; instead, it felt like something they had built over years of early mornings and quiet talks about what was possible. That kind of partnership doesn’t just appear out of thin air.

In her speech after winning, Eala talked about the messages she got from family and friends the night before the final. These messages were meant to let her know they were there for her no matter what. “Knowing it won’t be my last,” she said, “standing here in the middle of all this love.” That line stays with you. Not the trophy, the awards, or the money, though she did make about 15 million Philippine pesos during the week. It was the way she spoke that made me sure. It’s not pride. Someone who has done this for a long time and knows what she can do.

To her credit, Pegula dealt with her loss with more than just grace. In her speech as runner-up, she talked to the Filipino fans who had come to Washington, D.C., on a Monday to watch. She smiled and said, “I’m sure some people took off work.” “But I can’t believe you showed up. Tennis is getting bigger all over the world thanks to you guys. That was kind of her to say, and she meant it. The crowd was loud, never stopped, and very present. That’s not always the case at WTA tournaments, and it wasn’t at all on a rescheduled Monday.

If Eala wins, she’ll likely move up to around world No. 20, which would be the highest ranking of her career and beat the world No. 28 she reached earlier in July. Greg Rusedski, who used to be the number one ranked player in Britain, recently said that he thinks she will start to seriously challenge at Grand Slams. He might be right. It’s also possible that a player this young and on this path will surprise even the most optimistic predictions.

As I watch this happen week after week, I get the sense that Philippine tennis has been slowly building up to something for years. Alex Eala just gave it a name and a trophy.

Sierra has a strong, deep connection to Kansas City, from the neighborhoods east of Troost to the discussions that take place in the city hall halls. Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
