Adley Rutschman Is Heading to Boston — And Baltimore Fans Are Going to Feel This One for Years

There’s a certain kind of quiet that falls over a team when they trade the player they built their whole team around. The Baltimore Orioles traded Adley Rutschman, a catcher, to the Boston Red Sox on Monday, just hours before the trade deadline. The face of a seven-year rebuilding project was quickly driving up I-95 to play for a rival team in the same division.

Rutschman, who is 28, was the first player Mike Elias picked as Baltimore’s general manager. He was picked No. 1 overall in 2019, five months after the team had lost 115 games. When he got to the major leagues in 2022, he lived up to the hype and became an All-Star three times. For a while, it looked like he would be the kind of franchise cornerstone that teams that are having trouble draft for years. During Rutschman’s time as manager, the Orioles made the playoffs twice. The window started to close, and more and more people were hurt. At some point, the story around him quietly changed.

The Red Sox send right-handers Anthony Eyanson and Kyson Witherspoon, outfield prospect Enddy Azocar, catcher Carlos Narvaez, and a player to be named later in exchange for Rutschman and Rogers. The package is heavy on prospects, which makes sense since Elias has always put pitching at the top of his list of priorities for rebuilding. He is 21 years old and went to LSU. Eyanson has already pitched in High-A and Double-A and has a 1.32 earned run average with 12.4 strikeouts per nine innings. The first pick in the draft last year was Witherspoon, who has four pitches that scored 60 or higher on scouting scales. Neither is a sure thing, but neither is a filler piece either.

For Boston, it was pretty easy to figure out. Before this trade, they had a really bad situation with catching. This season, Conor Wong and Narvaez had a.615 OPS together, which was good enough for 25th place in the major leagues at the position. Even though he hurt his wrist and had to go on the injured list on July 19, Rutschman is still hitting.251 with eight home runs, 47 RBI, and an OPS of.764. This is his third time on the IL this year, after having problems with his ankle and concussion. On defense, he frames pitches in the 93rd percentile and has the best success rate of any major league catcher at 37.2% when throwing out runners on base. The Red Sox looked at his medical records and gave him the all-clear.

Take a moment to think about that. The Yankees and Rays were said to be interested, which probably made Boston pay more than they would have otherwise. It takes a certain amount of conviction or urgency to give up two of your top three pitching prospects in order to get a catcher who is currently out with an injury. It could be both.

It’s harder to get a clear picture of the Orioles’ team. Since June 2024, Rutschman has hit.670 over 235 games, hitting 23 home runs and driving in 96 runs. Not even half of Baltimore’s games he caught. The Orioles extended catcher Samuel Basallo earlier this year and went 25-21 as Baltimore’s starter compared to 24-27 with Rutschman behind the plate. This is a stat that teams can use in any way that fits their argument, but it is a fact nonetheless. It’s not clear if Rutschman’s drop in production is because of his injuries, the team around him, or something else that’s harder to pin down.

What’s not unclear is that the organization that selected him over Bobby Witt Jr. — now locked into a long-term deal in Kansas City and widely regarded as one of the ten best players in baseball — is now betting on a new generation of prospects to deliver what this one couldn’t. In Baltimore, this cycle happens all the time. Fans really were patient during the tough times. The anger is the same now.

Seeing how this is going makes me think that both sides are betting on futures they don’t fully understand yet. Boston thinks that Rutschman’s health gives them an improvement that is important enough to matter in October. Baltimore thinks that Eyanson’s slider and Witherspoon’s four-pitch arsenal will one day be useful to their pitching development staff. In two years, one of those bets will likely look smarter. It’s just not clear which one it is yet.

Fans last saw Rutschman wave to them from the field at Camden Yards during a home series in July. That picture is getting closer now. The Orioles are officially moving on, but there won’t be a lot of a fuss.

Sierra has a strong, deep connection to Kansas City, from the neighborhoods east of Troost to the discussions that take place in the city hall halls. Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
