The strangest thing about it is that the way it happened feels both scary and like it happened all the time. On July 25, an American Airlines Boeing 787 took off from Fiumicino Airport in Rome and flew to Philadelphia. It was about three hours into the trip across the Atlantic when six of the nine flight attendants started to feel dizzy. Not just a little off. The pilots were so dizzy that they decided to change their course and send the plane north toward Dublin, Ireland instead of west toward Pennsylvania.
Early reports said it was because of a “reported odor onboard caused by an oven.” American Airlines has not given away all the details about the smell. Take a moment to think about that vagueness. A smell strong enough to make two-thirds of a flight’s cabin crew sick, and the airline’s public explanation is still, at best, not complete.
When Flight AA719 landed in Dublin, it had 281 people on board. A group of paramedics met the plane at the gate. The six flight attendants who were sick and the one passenger who also said they were sick were checked out by emergency workers and then sent home. It’s really good news that no one was seriously hurt. Still, the plans for 281 people were changed. They were taken by bus to hotels, where they were given free rooms and rebooked on a flight to Philadelphia the next day. It thanked customers for being understanding and praised the crew for being professional. The normal language. That makes sense.
The pattern is harder to just brush off. It wasn’t just one time. In June, just over a month ago, an American Airlines flight from New York to Philadelphia had to turn around and go to Syracuse because two pilots were sick from a smell in the cockpit. A different flight, a different route, but the same main plan. A smell that can’t be named. A sick crew. The landing wasn’t planned. This could just be a few strange mechanical events that are easy to explain. It’s also possible that something important is going on in some planes that needs to be looked into more closely.

When it comes to aviation safety, things move slowly until they have to. The history of injuries caused by turbulence in the industry is similar. A study from November 2025 found that 143 serious injuries and 218 minor injuries were reported to the National Transportation Safety Board during turbulence incidents from 2008 to 2023. About 93% of those hurt were flight attendants. These aren’t strange events. They are a type of risk that the people working in the cabin take on a lot, and you can hardly see them.
As these problems mount up, it seems that the people who are least protected by the systems that are supposed to find problems early are the ones who are most likely to be affected by whatever goes wrong in the air. Flight attendants do more than just serve people. They work as safety crew. Six of them having to leave because of a smell in the middle of the ocean is not a small problem; that’s a crew working at only a third of its full capacity over the Atlantic.
People are talking about the AA1937 emergency landing online. It ended without any tragedy. The crew did a good job. They made the right choice. Dublin took care of it. People check into their hotels and order room service, but the story isn’t quite over yet. What made the smell happen? Why does this happen over and over? Another question is why the explanation always seems like the last sentence of a report that no one finished writing?
