Kalshi traders aren’t really hedging their bets on the Democratic primary for Senate in Michigan. On the prediction market platform, Abdul El-Sayed is currently in a strong lead going into today’s vote. Traders think he has a 62% chance of winning by 15 points or more. That’s not a lean; it’s a question. The more interesting question is whether the markets know something that the polls don’t.
Haley Stevens, a moderate four-term congresswoman who has spent a lot of this race trying to position herself as the stable, electable choice, is running against El-Sayed in the primary. El-Sayed is a former public health official with deep roots in the community. Stevens is right that voters also think about how electable someone is. There is no way for Democrats to get too comfortable in Michigan. Traders say that the energy isn’t on her side of the table, though.
Kalshi Michigan Senate markets make predictions that go far beyond the primary as well. Traders think El-Sayed has a 65% chance of winning the seat in November against Mike Rogers, who is likely to be the Republican nominee. Rogers has 36% of the market share in that area. Even though those numbers don’t determine fate, they do show that traders are confident in a way that polls haven’t quite confirmed.
A recent EPIC-MRA poll found that things are a lot more competitive. In a made-up general election race between Stevens and Rogers, Stevens comes out on top 44 to 42 percent. There is a 46–43 lead for Rogers if the nominee is changed to El-Sayed. Even though it’s only a small change, it’s important in a state that has recently gone in both strong directions. There is a big difference between what seems to be moving things forward and what actually does that in November.

The ideological stakes are very high in this primary, which isn’t usually the case. El-Sayed has worked hard to support universal health care and has been a vocal opponent of U.S. military aid to Israel. Because of these views, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Ro Khanna have all backed him. On the other hand, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Senator Ruben Gallego are behind Stevens. This is the kind of establishment support that usually counts in a Democratic primary but hasn’t seemed to be as reliable lately.
The Senate seat in Michigan is important outside of Michigan. It’s important for Democrats to have this if they want to take control of the upper chamber and fight back against Republican priorities. That’s what every Democrat in this state is working with, and it makes the choice between El-Sayed and Stevens feel less like a party debate and more like a real strategic choice that will affect more than just Michigan.
It’s still not clear if prediction markets like Kalshi are really showing how people really feel about elections or if they’re just showing the excitement of traders who are more involved, more online, and more progressive. That’s not always the same group of people who show up to Tuesday Democratic primaries in their area. Seeing El-Sayed’s numbers rise in the Kalshi Michigan Senate polls while other polls show the general election race as closer is a good reminder that it’s not always easy to tell what will happen in an election.
