The answer appears immediately when you type “Role Model age” into a search bar. Twenty-nine. The performer who goes by that name, Tucker Pillsbury, was born in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, on May 15, 1997, and will turn 30 next spring. It’s a neat fact. Additionally, it gives you very little information about how he arrived.

Begin with the Elvis era. He reportedly dressed up as Elvis Presley and performed for his family when he was younger. This may seem absurd, but you can see how much stage confidence that type of upbringing can develop. He relocated to Pittsburgh in 2014 to attend Point Park University to study film. Then there was the broken wrist, a skateboarding and skiing mishap, and a dorm room where two friends had left their music gear. He made rap mixtapes and taught himself Logic Pro while trapped inside with a cast. His grades declined. He dropped out of school.
The subsequent events are not as glamorous as the legend implies. In 2017, he transitioned from rapping under the name Tucker to singing under the name Role Model. Arizona in the Summer, his debut EP, was recorded in a closet. In 2018, Interscope signed him after Mac Miller heard about it and invited him to Los Angeles. It’s understandable why Pillsbury has described meeting Miller as the most significant event of his life. One influential person paid attention to a closet recording, and it became a career.
The slow part came next. His debut album, Rx, never made it to the Billboard 200 in 2022 despite a number of EPs that followed. On a Heatseekers chart, it peaked. In 2024, Kansas Anymore performed better, ranking higher in Australia and 82nd in the US. “Sally, When the Wine Runs Out” from the deluxe edition was the song that altered the atmosphere. After he teased the song on TikTok, it became popular. By October 2025, he was performing on Saturday Nite Live, and Charli XCX happened to wander into the show. Variety named him Triple Threat of the Year in December of that year.
“High Hopes 3000” was Chuck Timely & the Hourglass’s first Hot 100 entry, and the album peaked at number 10 on the US albums chart this year. Is this an overnight success, then? Hardly. From the closet to the top ten, it takes nine years, give or take. That has an almost comforting quality, and it’s important to note that many people who begin at age 20 finish by age 27.
The personal side is also framed by age 29. Pillsbury has been candid about depression since receiving a type 1 diabetes diagnosis at the age of ten. His lyrics, which are frequently referred to as confessional, cover relationships, sex, and mental health in a straightforward manner. From a lengthy relationship with Emma Chamberlain to a more recent one with Dakota Johnson, which is said to have ended, his love life has been made public. It’s difficult to ignore the fact that he recently discussed moving on in the new album.
It’s difficult to ignore the name’s irony. At one point, he gave the impression that it originated from a Paul Rudd comedy before acknowledging that it was a joke. No one chooses the stage name “Role Model” with the intention of becoming one. However, a certain type of fan—the kind who also wants to finish something they started late—might view him in that exact manner.
Good Sex, a Netflix romantic comedy, is scheduled for release in 2027, and he will be touring North America this autumn. It’s still unclear if turning thirty makes a difference. Most likely not much. It appears that the years that didn’t seem like much were already the interesting ones.
