If you ask a group of fans if Cobra Kai and Karate Kid: Legends are related, you’ll get at least three different responses. It’s a sequel, according to some. Some maintain that it is unrelated to the show. The truth, which is a little awkward, lies in the middle.

Let’s start with the solid. Ralph Macchio has stated that the movie is set approximately three years after the Cobra Kai finale. Even though the two projects are distinct ecosystems, he told Variety that aligning the timeline made the new film make sense to him. They do, in fact, share a universe. Daniel LaRusso takes the series’ events with him.

Need to watch Cobra Kai first? No, the film works on its own

This is the catch, though. Legends was not created by any of the Cobra Kai creators. As you watch, you can sense that absence. The world is different, the tone is different, and the main character is a completely different person. Ben Wang portrays Li Fong, a Chinese adolescent who trained under Jackie Chan’s Mr. Han in Beijing before moving to New York City with his family. He never enters a Cobra Kai dojo. He hardly ever hears of one.

That’s where the confusion begins, and to be honest, it makes sense. The rivalries between Miyagi-Do, Eagle Fang, and Cobra Kai itself were watched by fans for six seasons. It can be odd to walk into a theater expecting some of that payoff and find a boxing story about a pizza shop instead. It’s a fun movie, but there’s hardly any connection to the show, according to a thread on the Cobra Kai subreddit.

The movie serves as a bridge between two distinct franchise branches. The 2010 Jackie Chan remake and the original Karate Kid movies are subtly connected when Han goes to Los Angeles to ask Daniel for assistance. The line “two branches, one tree,” which indicates that Mr. Miyagi’s karate and Han’s family’s kung fu have similar origins, appears frequently in the film. It’s a clever concept that provides Macchio with a genuine task.

At the very end is the most famous Cobra Kai moment. Li Fong delivers a pizza to Daniel at his San Fernando home. Then, in a brief cameo, William Zabka’s Johnny Lawrence offers Daniel a job at a pizza place with a karate theme. The purpose of it is to make people laugh. It doesn’t advance any plot. The two longtime rivals’ easy warmth, however, speaks volumes about how far they’ve come and suggests that the events of the show are still in the background.

All of this has been made clear by director Jonathan Entwistle. In essence, he said that there are numerous seasons of Cobra Kai and that this film is part of the larger Karate Kid universe rather than Cobra Kai. It’s a fair framing. Given how much the marketing relied on the Daniel and Han pairing, it also explains why some viewers felt excluded.

Do you have to watch Cobra Kai before Legends? Most likely not. For someone who is only familiar with the 1984 original or even the 2010 remake, the movie works just fine. However, if you’ve watched the show, you might find it enjoyable to see where Daniel’s journey has taken him.

Whether Sony will expand on this configuration is still unknown. Fans seem to be interested in seeing Li Fong interact with students from the Cobra Kai world in a sequel. As of right now, it is best to think of Karate Kid: Legends as a cousin rather than a child of the series. Different home, same family.
