Who Won, Johnny or Wolf? The Final Fight That Ended Cobra Kai Forever

For forty years, Johnny Lawrence has been losing. Not only on karate mats, but also in relationships, fatherhood, and self-esteem. You could sense the weight of all those years bearing down on the moment when Cobra Kai’s series finale finally set him up for one final battle, against Iron Dragons’ Sensei Wolf at the Sekai Taikai World Championship.

To be clear, Johnny prevailed. However, the question of how and what it truly meant is more intriguing than who won.

By most standards, Wolf was the best fighter. Even Johnny acknowledged it. Wolf was not a villain in the conventional Cobra Kai sense; rather, he was a former Sekai Taikai champion with keen instincts and the kind of cold precision that comes from decades of unbeaten competition. He was neither cartoonish nor cruel. Technically speaking, he was simply superior. The final result felt less like a sports movie cliché after Johnny’s admission and more like something that was earned through character rather than choreography.

A number of almost unthinkable events led to the actual fight. The team scores ended in a deadlock after Miguel defeated Axl of Iron Dragons to secure the boys’ title for Cobra Kai. A tiebreaker between the senseis of the two dojos was mandated by the tournament rules. With Daniel LaRusso standing in his corner and dressed in a Cobra Kai gi, of all things, Johnny took the mat against a man who had never lost a major tournament.

More was conveyed by that picture alone than by the majority of the series’ dialog. Miyagi-Do to the core, Daniel LaRusso stands in solidarity with his former rival while refusing to part with his headband. It was startling and, to be honest, subtly flawless. After decades of hostility, the two men had finally realized that their ideologies weren’t diametrically opposed. They complemented each other.

The score was tied in sudden death, and the decisive moment was one point. Wolf lunged forward. No, Johnny didn’t. Cobra Kai’s fundamental tenet of “Strike First” was not followed; instead, he waited, read the attack, dropped low, and swept Wolf off his feet for the winning point. Daniel had employed the same reasoning against Johnny in 1984, the crane kick that set off thirty years of personal collapse. The moment that broke Johnny had taught him something.

That has an almost uncomfortable poetic quality. Johnny Lawrence’s 1984 defeat was more than just a sporting setback; it became the pivotal moment in his adult life. Over the course of six seasons, Cobra Kai essentially examined what happens when someone is unable to adequately deal with such humiliation. In the show’s conclusion, the past was finally made useful rather than being reversed. At the exact moment Johnny needed it most, Daniel’s counsel and Mr. Miyagi’s methods, which had been passed down through years of rivalry and grudging friendship, appeared.

It’s important to remember that Wolf is not diminished by his defeat. He was extremely precise in his fighting, and Johnny was obviously on the defensive for a large portion of the fight. It was not skill that made the difference.

The kind of steadiness that only arises when a person has truly come to terms with who they are was more difficult to measure. In the days leading up to the fight, Johnny had visited his mother’s grave, welcomed a new son, made amends with Miguel, and trained with Daniel. He was more than just physically ready. Perhaps for the first time in the series, he was truly there.

Some viewers believed that Johnny should have lost because it might have been a more daring and nuanced conclusion for a character whose storyline revolved around failure. That is a position that can be defended. However, it falls short of what the show was aiming for. Johnny wasn’t given this victory to cheer up the crowd. Only because he had truly changed—that is, by ceasing to lead with aggression, ceasing to believe he had to do everything alone, and allowing the people around him to matter—was it possible for him to win.

Wolf was a better fighter. Nevertheless, Johnny prevailed. It is not contradictory. That’s the whole idea.

She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time.
