A certain type of musician has a story that seems almost too detailed to be true. Among them was Sass Jordan. On December 23, 1960, Sarah Jordan was born in Birmingham, England. Her family relocated to Montreal when she was three years old. Her father taught French literature. Her mother had been an actress and ballerina. Given her backgrounds, it might have been inevitable that she would become a professional performer.

She began leading bands in downtown Montreal clubs at the age of sixteen. not practicing. Not daydreaming about it. doing it in a city renowned for its late-night music scene, on actual stages, and in front of actual audiences. She sang and played bass, and at some point she developed the kind of presence that caused people to pause what they were doing.

Tell Somebody, her debut album, was released by Atlantic Records in 1988 and became platinum in Canada in less than a year. More significantly, it won her the 1989 Juno Award for Most Promising Female Vocalist. It’s easy to forget how uncommon it was for a woman to be competing in the harder end of rock during that time. Jordan was influencing that environment rather than merely surviving it.

Globally, things became truly fascinating in the early 1990s. After relocating to Los Angeles in 1990 and releasing Racine in 1992, she was named the Top Female Rock Artist of the Year by Billboard. She recorded “Trust in Me” as a duet with Joe Cocker for the soundtrack of The Bodyguard that same year; the song sold tens of millions of copies worldwide and peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for 20 weeks. Perhaps more people heard Sass Jordan’s voice in 1992 than they ever knew.

Taylor Hawkins, a 22-year-old drummer, joined her touring band around the same time. Hawkins went on to say that it was the first time he truly understood what it was like to be in a rock and roll band. He claimed that his first rock and roll salary came from Jordan. He became one of the most well-liked drummers of his generation after joining the Foo Fighters a few years later. It sounds like a made-up backstory detail, but it’s not.

At the peak of her career, she toured with Van Halen, Aerosmith, the Rolling Stones, and AC/DC. There’s a great story about the Van Halen guys calling her up and basically saying, “Come over, we’re just up the road.” It’s almost too casual to believe. She was working in that circle. Nevertheless, her name never quite achieved the degree of widespread recognition it most likely deserved.

Her career as an actress is truly unexpected. Jordan, who played Janis Joplin in the off-Broadway play Love, Janis, freely acknowledged that she wasn’t even a fan of Joplin prior to the role. Mostly because it was a free trip to New York, she attended the audition. She performed 19 Joplin songs every nite for four months after receiving the part, even though she wasn’t sure she wanted it. She claimed that by the end, she had grown to deeply and reluctantly admire the woman about whom she had been doubtful. A story like that reveals a lot about Sass Jordan.

There was a distinct chapter in her television career. From 2003 to 2008, she judged all six seasons of Canadian Idol, earning a reputation as the panel’s most sympathetic member. Notably, she was the only female judge. Later on, she listed Melissa O’Neil and Carly Rae Jepsen as her favorites that she had seen go through that process.

She was named Honorary Colonel of the Royal Canadian Air Force’s 417 Combat Support Squadron in 2012, a title that is uncommon for rock stars and demonstrates the level of respect she had earned in Canada over many years.

Rebel Moon Blues, her 2020 blues album, peaked at No. 5 on Billboard’s Blues Albums chart, reminding listeners that the voice had not diminished. It still had that texture that had initially made her impossible to ignore: warm in the middle, rough around the edges.

On October 2, 2026, Sass Jordan passed away in the company of her loved ones. She was sixty-five. She left behind her daughter Stella Jordan-Sharp, her husband Derek Sharp of The Guess Who, and a catalog that spans more genres and decades than most artists ever try. There’s a feeling that those who somehow missed her story the first time around will find it now. With careers this complex, that usually occurs.

Sierra has a strong, deep connection to Kansas City, from the neighborhoods east of Troost to the discussions that take place in the city hall halls. Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
