Tommy Detamore Passing – Country Music Loses a Quiet Giant at 70

In every industry, there are individuals who perform the majority of the actual work without ever seeking praise. Tommy Detamore was the type of person who stayed in the studio long after the main performer had left, continuing to listen, make adjustments, and pay attention to how something sounded at two in the morning. At the age of 70, he passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. The next day, his wife Sandra made the announcement, and her choice of words revealed a lot about him: “a respected musician, producer, collaborator, mentor, and creative force in Country Music.”

You shouldn’t write a tribute like that for someone who had a successful career. That’s what you say about someone who consistently showed up for decades and left things in a better state than when he arrived.

When Detamore began playing the pedal steel guitar in the 1970s, it was a key component of the traditional country sound, which is characterized by long, aching tones that run beneath lyrics and give them a heavier feel than they seem on paper. Like most serious musicians, he developed that talent gradually and eventually rose to prominence in the Texas country music scene. He established Cherry Ridge Studio in Floresville, Texas, in 1991. Over time, it developed into a working home for country musicians. Jim Lauderdale and Ray Price were among the names that passed thru those doors. It’s not a small resume.

Detamore’s story is subtly striking because, until recently, his career was still very much alive. He received the Hero of Western Swing award from the Cowtown Society of Western Music at a ceremony in Wichita Falls, Texas, just weeks before he passed away. He thanked a friend for accepting the award on his behalf because he was unable to attend (his absence was noted, but the reason was not disclosed at the time). They had just been celebrating a platinum-selling project that he produced and played on, Sandra said in her tribute. A man is not winding down like that. That man is still in the midst of things.

The cause of death is still unknown. In retrospect, the timing of that platinum news seems even stranger because Sandra described it as abrupt. A certain type of grief is associated with sudden loss; there is no protracted illness to prepare for, no gradual farewell. She wrote, “This was so sudden,” and those four words have a lot of significance.

It’s important to state clearly that Tommy Detamore wasn’t well-known outside of the country music industry, and even within it, his recognition was consistently more professional than public. However, the musicians who collaborated with him were aware of his identity. “Steelman” was more than just a nickname for the guitar among those who knew him well. It also seems to have been a character description. In her farewell post, Sandra used it as if it meant something particular and merited.

Sandra and their son Thomas survive him. Plans for his funeral are still being made, and Sandra has made it apparent that she wants to give him a dignified farewell in the community rather than one that is hurried.

The front-facing stars of country music tend to be remembered, but sometimes the people who made those stars sound like themselves are forgotten. Tommy Detamore was one of those individuals for more than fifty years. The production decisions he made at Cherry Ridge Studio, the steel guitar lines he recorded, and the younger musicians he mentored are all still available. I’m still playing. It’s difficult not to believe that’s precisely what he would have desired.

Born in Kansas City, Sierra Foster writes about politics and serves as Senior Editor at kbsd6.com. She was raised paying attention to this city, not just living in it. Sierra has a strong, deep connection to Kansas City, from the neighborhoods east of Troost to the discussions that take place in the city hall halls. Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
