Karate Kid: Legends carried a lot of weight when it debuted in American theaters on May 30, 2025. A brand-new lead in Ben Wang, forty years of franchise history, two legendary actors returning to roles that fans truly love, and the challenging task of following Cobra Kai—a show that, at its height, was genuinely one of the more satisfying legacy revivals in recent memory. With a $45 million budget, the movie made $117 million worldwide. It’s not a catastrophe. Additionally, Sony does not instantly approve a sequel based solely on the number.

Karate Kid: Legends has not yet received an official sequel announcement. That’s the truthful response. However, the film’s conclusion—especially the post-credits scene—indicates that the filmmakers were considering more than just one installment. Victor reopens his pizzeria. Mr. Han goes back to China. Then Li Fong delivers a frozen pizza to Daniel LaRusso back in Los Angeles, along with a handwritten note and a picture of his tournament win. When Johnny Lawrence arrives, they argue over whether California or New York pizza is superior, and Johnny proposes Miyagi-Dough, a restaurant with a dojo theme. The scene is lighthearted and purposefully informal. However, it connects the characters in a way that obviously establishes a plot point. That might just be fan service. It could also be a blueprint.

Li Fong was first shown in the movie as a Beijing-born kung fu prodigy who relocates to New York, becomes involved with a local karate champion named Conor, and eventually trains under both Mr. Han and Daniel LaRusso at the same time. The character has a genuine moment of arrival during the tournament finale, when Li uses an adapted dragon kick to win the Five Boros Tournament. By the end, Conor, his adversary throughout the movie, even gains Li’s respect, opening the door for a more nuanced dynamic in a sequel. These are not loose threads that were inadvertently left in. They seem purposeful.

The more fervent segments of the fandom have spent a lot of time debating a complicating factor. While the original Karate Kid movies, the 2010 remake, and Legends are all owned by Columbia Pictures at Sony, Cobra Kai, which ran for six seasons on Netflix before ending in 2025, is owned by Netflix. Therefore, it is technically impossible for Johnny Lawrence, Sam LaRusso, Robby Keene, and the other Cobra Kai characters to appear in a Legends sequel without a licensing agreement between two studios that don’t have a clear reason to make one simple. Despite being set three years after the show’s conclusion, Legends felt somewhat cut off from the world Cobra Kai created because of this truly annoying structural wall. William Zabka’s role as Johnny in the post-credits scene was probably negotiated especially for that one appearance.

It is worthwhile to carefully read the box office picture. The opening weekend earned $21 million domestically, placing third behind Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. The $117 million global total was regarded as a minor underperformance compared to expectations. At the time, there was some speculation that Cobra Kai had taught his fans to anticipate this story on Netflix rather than in a theater. It received an A- CinemaScore from viewers who did see it, which is significantly favorable. Critics were divided, with 57% on Rotten Tomatoes and 51% on Metacritic agreeing that it relied more on nostalgia than on creating something truly novel. That’s not a fatal review, but it’s also not the kind of response that eliminates any possibility of a follow-up.

One of the things that audiences reacted to the most favorably was Ben Wang’s portrayal of Li Fong. His energy is different from Ralph Macchio’s in 1984; he is more restrained and less reactive, and the relationship between him, Jackie Chan, and Macchio was more effective on screen than it could have been on paper. There is a version of this that works quite well if the sequel centers on Li as the obvious lead and gives Chan and Macchio supporting roles that feel earned rather than required. It’s still genuinely unclear if Sony decides to produce that version.

Early-stage spinoff development rumors have been making the rounds on the internet. Nothing has been verified. A sequel to the 2010 movie spent years in different stages of development before finally evolving into something completely different, so the franchise has been here before. If you love this world, you have to be patient. A frozen pizza with a note inside is, if nothing else, a pretty specific thing to include in a post-credits scene for no apparent reason, and the characters are interesting enough to keep watching.
