On October 21, 2026, Tom Skerritt passed away at his Seattle home. He was ninety-three. His family confirmed the news, stating that he died of natural causes. Their statement didn’t use fancy language; instead, it described a man who loved humor, curiosity, storytelling, and veterans, and who infused love into the lives of those around him. Silent words for a career that was anything but modest.

Over the course of six decades, he made appearances in more than 170 motion pictures and television shows. It’s easy to scroll past that number, but it symbolizes something genuine: an actor who never stopped working and who accepted both small and big roles with the same obvious dedication. In the 1962 film War Hunt, he starred with a young Robert Redford. Even in 2025, he continued to make on-screen appearances. That kind of longevity in Hollywood is not something that happens by coincidence or by being cautious.

The majority of those who are familiar with the name link it to a particular function. For some, it’s Commander Viper from Top Gun, the commanding figure who guided Maverick from a distance while remaining composed and resolute in a fast-paced movie. For others, it’s Captain Dallas from Ridley Scott’s Alien, who is seated at the table next to John Hurt when everything goes horribly wrong. Skerritt once claimed that the woman’s role as the hero was one of the reasons he was drawn to that script. That comment about a 1979 movie still seems prescient.

Picket fences came next. Skerritt portrayed Sheriff Jimmy Brock in all 87 episodes of the 1992–1996 CBS drama, which was set in the fictional small Wisconsin town of Rome. David E. Kelley, the show’s creator, seemed to genuinely enjoy rather than find it unsettling that the cast never knew what Kelley was going to write next, as Skerritt once recalled. Years later, he remarked, “You know you’ve got something pretty special when you have that attachment, when there’s that anticipation with everyone involved.” For the part, he was awarded the 1993 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. That year, the program also took home the best drama award.

On Thursday, Lauren Holly, who co-starred with him as Deputy Max Stewart on Picket Fences, posted a tribute that struck with the kind of precision that press releases are never able to. She wrote that although she had collaborated with Skerritt on several projects, Picket Fences was the first, and he served as their leader. She talked about having fits of uncontrollable laughter. It’s difficult to ignore how much that one detail reveals about what it was like to be around him in real life, not about his resume.

By today’s standards, his career path was unusual. He was raised in a middle-class Detroit home, enlisted in the Air Force for four years following high school, and became interested in filmmaking after seeing Citizen Kane at UCLA. In order to pursue acting, he left before completing his degree. Playing Duke Forrest alongside Donald Sutherland and Elliott Gould in Robert Altman’s 1970 film MAS*H, which captured a particular aspect of American ambivalence during the Vietnam War, was his breakthrough performance. It received five Academy Award nominations. Skerritt was in his mid-thirties. In the years that followed, his career faltered a little with a run of unsuccessful European westerns before his agent helped reposition him with The Turning Point, which won him a National Board of Review Award in 1977.

Steel Magnolias, A River Runs Through It, Contact, Cheers, Brothers & Sisters, and other films that read like a survey of American popular culture came next. He was a face that appeared in movies where significant events were taking place, frequently portraying fathers, authority figures, or men bearing silent burdens. Because he never oversold those roles, it seems that directors trusted him with them.

In addition to his wife Julie Tokashiki, whom he wed in 1998, he is survived by five children. His family requested that people remember him for his generosity and curiosity. That request appears likely to be granted based on what his colleagues are saying.

Sierra has a strong, deep connection to Kansas City, from the neighborhoods east of Troost to the discussions that take place in the city hall halls. Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
