The response to Prime Video’s announcement of a new television version of Stephen King’s Carrie was, to put it mildly, mixed. The story was previously told with Sissy Spacek in 1976, as a television film in 2002, and with Chloë Grace Moretz in 2013. The announcement was accompanied by a certain weariness. However, something changed when the cast list began to come together.

Casting NoteSummer H. Howell was selected from over 1,400 auditionees

Summer H. Howell, a young actress who defeated over 1,400 other candidates for the title role of Carrie White, is at the center of it all. Prior to the audition, she had never read King’s book. She hadn’t seen any of the earlier versions. In fact, showrunner Mike Flanagan advised her to avoid them until the end of the series. Viewers will have to make their own judgments about whether or not that choice was successful, but Howell’s performance has a freshness that feels genuinely unforced, like someone meeting this character without the burden of all those other versions bearing down on her.

Margaret White, Carrie’s controlling and fervently religious mother, is portrayed by Samantha Sloyan. Flanagan has stated that Sloyan, a longtime collaborator, was “born to play” this role. Sloyan is most known for her work in Midnight Mass. The way the show handles Margaret in a different way than previous adaptations is intriguing. Instead of portraying her only as an abuser, the show looks for the love that exists within her fear, even if it is harmful. Sloyan has stated, “She loves Carrie, but she doesn’t understand Carrie.” Although Piper Laurie’s portrayal of Margaret in 1976 is still very different, that is a more nuanced version of the character.

Principal Grayle is played by Matthew Lillard, who most viewers are most familiar with from Scream and Scooby-Doo. Lillard has spoken thoughtfully about the show’s fidelity to King’s original material, saying it’s closer than De Palma’s film ever was. It’s a bit of casting that could have felt like a stunt. He talked about being “blown away” by the younger actors he saw on set. When someone with Lillard’s level of experience makes such a remark, it resonates differently.

Amber Midthunder, who gained widespread recognition with Prey, plays Miss Desjardin, the gym instructor who provides Carrie with a modicum of empathy in a school that provides very little. Midthunder has stated that she was persuaded to sign on by Flanagan’s vision rather than the source material or the legacy. Her performance has a certain stillness that feels thoughtful, though it’s possible that’s just something actors say.

Sue Snell, played by Siena Agudong, is the girl whose guilt initiates the prom nite plot. Arthur Conti, who most recently starred in Beetlejuice, portrays Billy Nolan, the character that John Travolta first played in 1976. Joel Oulette also takes on Tommy Ross, the well-intentioned boyfriend whose generosity contributes to the tragedy. This group has a subtle effect. No one is attempting to surpass Spacek Spacek. Instead of working from the 1976 movie, each performer appears to be working from the novel outward.

There are also a few strategically placed cameos in the show. In one episode, Mark Hamill plays a character called Damon Nostra, and by all accounts, he was genuinely thrilled to be there. The guest cast, which includes Katee Sackhoff, Heather Graham, Carla Gugino, and David Dastmalchian, gives the production a density that suggests genuine dedication rather than a fast franchise cash-in.

On October 7, 2026, all eight episodes debuted on Prime Video, and the initial IMDb ratings indicate that viewers are, at least partially, following along. It’s worth considering whether this rendition of Carrie merits a spot next to the original. However, it has a real chance thanks to the cast, which was assembled with care and is led by a 14-year-old newcomer who was given one of the most iconic roles in horror.

Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile.
