Many people were skeptical of the 2010 remake of The Karate Kid. There was something untouchable about the original 1984 movie, the kind that people defend at dinner parties. And here was Will Smith’s child, barely a teenager, taking on the main part. Whether it was justified or not, it was assumed that nepotism had moved. What transpired on screen was completely different.

At the time of filming, Jaden Christopher Syre Smith was eleven years old. He was born in Malibu, California, on July 8, 1998, and had already made an appearance on sets with his father in The Pursuit of Happyness in 2006. The Karate Kid, however, was on a different level. For about four months, the movie was shot on location in Beijing, at the Great Wall, and throughout China. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith served as producers, and the entire Smith family moved for the show. It’s possible that Jaden’s performance was influenced by this type of immersive setting—being far from home and surrounded by a foreign language and culture—in ways that are difficult to measure.

Craziest On-Set Memory (per Jaden)The suspended splits training

Just the training is worth stopping for. Jaden learned more than a few staged kicks. During his months of training with Jackie Chan’s professional stunt team, he practiced routines that included the suspended middle splits, a move that calls for a great deal of control and flexibility. Later, Jackie Chan—who isn’t exactly known for giving compliments lightly—wrote on his blog that Jaden’s dedication to the training made his own son look foolish. For a martial arts legend to say that about a child from Hollywood is a unique and striking statement. It implies that the child showed up and did work.

All of this has a financial side that still surprises people. For the movie, Jaden received a base salary of $3 million. He was eleven years old. For comparison, prior to the backend deals, Robert Downey Jr. earned half a million dollars for the 2008 film Iron Man. Jaden’s salary is still among the most unusual in the history of child acting, regardless of whether it was due to his father’s negotiating power or sincere studio confidence in the project.

The impact of the movie went beyond the screen. Jaden made an appearance on Justin Bieber’s single “Never Say Never,” which functioned as the movie’s theme song after it was released. That was a big cultural moment in 2010; Bieber was at the height of his early fame, and the partnership exposed Jaden to a much wider audience than the movie’s viewers. At the 2010 ShoWest Convention, he also won the Breakthrough Male Star of the Year award, which, in retrospect, seems more merited than ceremonial.

Even fifteen years later, it’s difficult to ignore the fact that Jaden has talked candidly about the incident, calling the suspended splits training his most bizarre and memorable set memory. Compared to other things, that particular type of physical memory endures in a different way. It was the training, the suffering, and the accomplishment of something truly challenging, not the red carpet or the prize. That has a grounding quality.

The movie’s minor identity confusion, which some viewers noticed at the time, is one noteworthy detail. Jaden’s character Dre Parker learns kung fu, not karate, despite being dubbed The Karate Kid. The narrative takes place in China, where Chan plays Mr. Han, a Chinese martial arts instructor. Although the title made sense from a business standpoint, it sparked a minor, ongoing controversy among martial arts fans. Karate was the subject of the original. Technically, this one wasn’t. Depending on how seriously one takes the genre, that may or may not matter, but it’s the kind of thing that shows how much the filmmakers relied on brand recognition over accuracy.

After releasing his debut album Syre in 2017, Jaden turned his attention to music and developed a career that eventually diverged from acting. His most popular piece is still The Karate Kid. It continues to stand as a movie that demanded more of its young lead than most productions would, and received a sincere performance in return.

She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
