Who Is the Real Villain in Cobra Kai? The Answer Is More Complicated Than You Think

You’ll get ten different answers if you ask ten Cobra Kai fans who the true villain is. John Kreese, some say. Terry Silver, some say. Daniel LaRusso is the solution, according to a genuinely enthusiastic section of Reddit, with deadpan seriousness. Even after six seasons and a definitive conclusion, the controversy has persisted since the show’s 2018 premiere. That in and of itself reveals something intriguing about the real purpose of the show.

Kreese is the official response, as stated by the creators in public. In an interview, showrunner Josh Heald stated unequivocally that Kreese was always “the big bad wolf of the franchise.” Because of him, Johnny Lawrence turned into the bully we first encountered in the 1984 movie. Terry Silver’s participation in Karate Kid III was motivated by him. He was the one who came back in season two and stealthily reclaimed Cobra Kai from Johnny, smothering any possibility of the dojo’s rehabilitation. If you go back far enough in time, you will find Kreese standing close to the origin of almost every significant act of harm in this universe.

It appeared that Mr. Miyagi was the first to grasp this. “No such thing as bad student, only bad teacher” is the line he delivers during a scene in the original movie where he watches Kreese coach his students with barely disguised contempt. After seeing the consequences unfold over the course of six seasons, it takes on a different meaning. Kreese taught more than just karate. A generation of children learned from him that showing mercy was a sign of weakness, and some of them carried that lesson with them for decades.

However, Terry Silver’s argument is more intriguing. Silver’s actions during the last seasons of Cobra Kai were genuinely colder than anything Kreese accomplished; they were more deliberate, patient, and prepared to use influence and money as weapons in addition to physical force.

Even Kreese appeared to realize by the end that the thing he had contributed to had outgrown him. In his last acts, Silver does not act like a secondary villain by abducting a new mother and her child. Regardless of what the creators have stated on record, it’s difficult to look at that and not wonder if the show ultimately positioned him as something darker.

Then there’s the Daniel argument, which, until you sit with it, seems like a troll viewpoint. The first season of Cobra Kai is really set up so that Daniel’s compulsive efforts to close down Johnny’s recently reopened dojo appear to be the actions of the antagonist. Daniel can’t let Johnny try to rebuild something on his own. Daniel, a man who has spent 35 years carrying around a high school rivalry like it happened last week, is depicted over the course of six seasons as being arrogant, reactive, and occasionally hypocritical. He isn’t exactly portrayed in the show as a villain, but it also doesn’t absolve him.

However, there is a more comprehensive interpretation of the show that seems to be the most truthful. According to a Reddit commentor, trauma—more especially, the kind that results from war, poor mentoring, and untreated wounds—is the true villain. Kreese was shattered when he returned from Vietnam. He gave that damage to Johnny, who then gave it to Miguel, who then gave it to someone else. Before Kreese ever discovered him, Silver was molded by his own unique demons. The idea that violent philosophy doesn’t just happen is a recurring theme in the show. It is inherited.

If you only need one name, Kreese is still the most obvious choice. The creators of the show attested to the fact that he had the greatest damage and the longest reach. Beneath all the tournament fights and dojo rivalries, Cobra Kai’s more intriguing question was whether any of these individuals were born to cause harm or if something happened before the cameras caught them. The response appeared to be the latter most of the time.
