Miller got married when she was 18. That’s a small part of the bigger, noisier story of her death—nearly a footnote next to the stalking claims, cyberstalking charges, and a Netflix docuseries—but it’s more important than it seems. She was a teenager who found a community at Myrtle Beach’s Solid Rock Church. Like many young women who attend close-knit evangelical churches, her love life and social life were deeply connected to that world.
Most news stories haven’t said what her first husband’s name was, but he was also in Solid Rock. From what could be seen, it looked like the kind of relationship that a church-going community would happily endorse. For me, the story gets more complicated and scary after what happened next.
Mica worked as a nanny for John-Paul Miller, the pastor of Solid Rock, when she was 20 years old, in 2015. He was 35 years old, married, and had five kids. From what the Francis family says, an affair started that year. The age difference of 15 years was big enough. But the situation that it happened in might have been even more important. Mica had been going to this church since she was a teenager and her family moved to Myrtle Beach. John-Paul was not only older than her, but she had looked up to him as a leader when she was younger. To TIME, co-director Julia Willoughby Nason put it simply: there was an imbalance of power from the start, even before the romantic parts.
The first marriage Mica was in ended quietly. John Paul’s did too. Mike, who was 23 at the time, married John-Paul, who was 38 at the time, on November 7, 2017. For her, that meant she had been married before and seen a marriage fall apart because of something she didn’t fully understand at the time. Now she was starting a new life as a pastor’s wife at the church where it all began. After the fact, Sierra Francis, her sister, said that John-Paul had “had his sights set on her from a young age” and used the word “grooming” to describe it. John-Paul has strongly denied this accusation, saying that they had a wonderful marriage based on love for each other.
We should take a moment to think about Mica’s first marriage. Not because it holds the answer to all of our questions, but because it shows us something about how young she was when the big events in her adult life began. She wasn’t even 21 yet, but she was already dealing with the end of one marriage and the start of an affair with her boss, the pastor. During those years, she made decisions in a world that was mostly controlled by John-Paul Miller. This included the church, the congregation, the professional hierarchy, and, it seems, a lot of her daily schedule as his nanny.
From the outside, this case seems to show that Mica’s first marriage wasn’t really a story in and of itself, but more of a turning point: a short, happy chapter that ended just as a bigger, more important chapter began. The person she became after that was very much tied to John-Paul and Solid Rock. It was her job to be his creative director, personal assistant, and second wife. She had his signature tattooed on her body, which her sister Sierra said made her feel “possessive” at the time.
After being married for almost six years, Mica asked John-Paul for a divorce in October 2023. The process was marked by filings, dismissals, and separations that kept going back and forth in the courts. She told the police that someone was cutting her tires. She said someone was after her. “If I end up with a bullet in my head, it wasn’t by me, it was JP,” she told her sister. On April 27, 2024, her body was found in a North Carolina state park. She was 30 years old.
The first marriage is a small part of a case that has become very public. Of course, it brings to mind how early Mica’s story became linked to the institution and the man who would have a huge impact on the rest of her life. She was only a young adult when her world shrunk down to this one church, this one neighborhood, and this one difficult and contentious relationship. One of the tougher questions this case keeps bringing up is whether or not that narrowing was her own choice. There is still no clear answer to this question.
