On September 11, 2024, Chad McQueen passed away at his ranch in Palm Desert, California. He was sixty-three. Organ failure, which resulted from a fall in 2020 from which Chad never fully recovered, was the cause of death, according to his longtime lawyer and friend Arthur Barens. When he died, his wife Jeanie and their kids were all around him.
There are still numerous unanswered questions about the 2020 fall. Chad “never fully recovered from” the injuries, according to Barens, who would not elaborate on the specifics. What is known is that the harm it inflicted gradually worsened over the course of four years until his body was unable to withstand it any more.

It’s important to remember that Chad’s body had previously experienced severe trauma. He almost died in 2006 after suffering a lung collapse while getting ready for the Daytona International Speedway’s Rolex 24 race. The accident put him in a coma for about a month and caused numerous fractures to his neck, arm, ribs, and leg. After that, he returned. In the end, the fall of 2020 turned out differently.
The way Chad McQueen carved out his own identity while living in the shadow of his father’s legend—on movie sets, racetracks, and ultimately through McQueen Racing, the business he started and managed for years—has a subtle poignancy. One of Hollywood’s most recognizable characters, Steve McQueen was the “King of Cool,” renowned for performing his own stunts and fixated on speed and machinery. He passed away in 1980 when Chad was just 19 years old. All of that was inherited by Chad. It wasn’t a pastime to race. By all accounts, it was a means of maintaining a relationship with a parent he lost far too soon.
Despite having a relatively short acting career (approximately two decades, from 1978 to 2001), he made a lasting impression as Dutch, the arrogant blond antagonist in the original 1984 Karate Kid. Although Dutch wasn’t particularly complicated, Chad portrayed him with a realistic edge that made him truly distinctive. In the 1986 follow-up, he played the same part again. The fact that the Cobra Kai creators later acknowledged that they had attempted to bring him back for the Netflix series but were unsuccessful is especially troubling at this point.
Steve McQueen’s official Instagram account had a modest but obviously sincere homage from his family. Chad was a loving husband and father, according to his wife and kids, who also mentioned that his love of racing had always been a way for him to pay tribute to the father he admired. McQueen Racing is still run by Chase and Madison McQueen, his children with Jeanie. A younger generation is familiar with his son Steven R. McQueen from his previous marriage to actress Stacey Toten thanks to The Vampire Diaries.
