Tokyo rarely sleeps, but on Sunday at two in the morning, it was close enough that nearly everyone was unprepared for the shaking. The capital and nearby Saitama, Kanagawa, and Chiba were all affected by the 5.9-magnitude earthquake that rocked the southern portion of Ibaraki prefecture. Even though the shaking itself felt abrupt and sharp to those startled awake in the dark, the damage was likely kept to a minimum due to the earthquake’s depth of about 70 kilometers below the surface.
At least 37 people had been hurt in five prefectures by the time officials had finished counting. Tokyo alone accounted for fifteen of those cases, with Saitama accounting for nine, Kanagawa for eight, Chiba for four, and Ibaraki for one. The majority of the injuries weren’t as dramatic as earthquakes sometimes sound in headlines. Individuals fell. They bumped into furniture. As terrified residents attempted to get out of bed too quickly, doors caught fingers and knees. That seems almost unremarkable, but that’s precisely how the majority of earthquake injuries actually occur—not from buildings collapsing, but rather from a body’s tiny, disorganized attempt to move more quickly than is safe.

The most serious case concerned an eighty-year-old woman in Yokohama, which is south of Tokyo, who hurt her hip while attempting to stand up when the shaking began. The elderly, whose bodies don’t recover from a bad fall the way a younger person’s might, are often the ones who suffer the most during these situations.
Seismologists dismiss this type of discrepancy as typical measurement variance between agencies. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the earthquake slightly lower, at 5.8, while Japan’s Meteorological Agency measured it at 5.9. There was no tsunami warning, which is a huge relief for a nation still shaped by the events of 2011. Additionally, officials verified that there were no anomalies at the roughly twelve nuclear facilities dispersed throughout the area. This check has become nearly automatic in Japan since Fukushima and most likely will remain so.
Trains were the main cause of the practical disruption. A number of local lines that served the northeast and express services that connected Tokyo to Narita Airport slowed. Notably, the Shinkansen continued to operate on time, a fact that demonstrates how Japan’s bullet trains are designed to withstand seismic activity with a stubborn dependability that other nations’ rail systems just lack. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi posted on X that shaking had decreased to level 5-lower on Japan’s intensity scale in all 23 wards of Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures, announcing the creation of a task force to evaluate the extent of any damage.
It’s simple to overlook the fact that this wasn’t an isolated incident when looking at the numbers. In the same week, dozens of smaller earthquakes were detected by Japan’s seismic network, including tremors near Kumamoto, off the coast of the Bousou Peninsula, and close to Kushiro. Only a few hours later that Sunday nite, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 occurred offshore close to Uraga. This type of clustering serves as a reminder that Japan is situated atop one of the world’s most active fault systems, making it difficult to distinguish between a busy and quiet week until much later.
Observing how rapidly things got back to normal gives the impression that this is just how life is in Japan. The trains start up again. The task force meets. People return to their beds. It’s still unclear if this cluster of activity is a sign of something more significant developing beneath the surface or if it’s just August in a nation that has learned to cope with an unstable ground beneath it, sometimes at terrible cost.
