Hayden Panettiere’s Abusive Ex Was With Her When She Died — What We Know

After reading about Hayden Panettiere‘s last days, there is something that stays with you. Not just the sadness of losing someone in public and so young (36 years old). Because of the way the situation was set up, a woman who had written openly about being abused and shared her trauma with the world was seen at an airport the day before she died, traveling with the man she had written about.

Brian Hickerson was arrested more than once for hitting Panettiere while they were dating and after they broke up. When he was arrested in 2020, he punched her in the face. In April 2021, he pled not guilty to two felony charges of domestic violence against her. He went to jail, finished his probation, and was told to take classes on domestic violence. There are no hints in the legal record.

What makes this even harder to understand is that Hickerson did not try to change the story in interviews after Panettiere’s memoir came out in May. He just confirmed it. “I did it. I got arrested for, you know, abusing her,” he told TMZ. “I did it.” He even said the book was amazing and told people to read it, pointing out that his chapter was in it. Being honest in this way is strange. From the outside, it’s hard to tell if it’s out of genuine regret or something more planned.

This Is Me: A Reckoning, Panettiere’s autobiography, came out in May 2026. She wrote about how traumatic the relationship was and how hard it was to leave an abuser as “complex and grinding.” Anyone who has read about domestic violence research knows that the problems are real and have been studied. Leaving is statistically the most dangerous time for survivors, and an abusive partner can keep a hold on your mind that is hard to break. No one thought Panettiere was weak or naive. A lot of people, from all walks of life and income levels, get caught in the same thing.

A judge turned down Hickerson’s request to have his felony convictions erased or lowered to misdemeanors just days before she died. It’s not clear what Panettiere knew about the choice or how it made her feel. On August 15, they were seen in a picture together at Los Angeles International Airport, so it looks like they were traveling together. Around 1:50 p.m. local time the next afternoon, emergency services were called to a home in Greenville, South Carolina, where Panettiere was found not breathing. Sixty-six. Police said that Hickerson was at the scene of the crime.

The official cause of her death is still being looked into. Officials at the scene were heard talking about “overdose” and “cardiac arrest,” but no official report has been made public yet. There were no signs of wrongdoing that the police saw. Hickerson hasn’t said anything about her death in public.

It’s hard not to feel the weight of what Panettiere did in her last few months—the bravery it takes to name abuse and let people see the worst parts of a life in order to stay alive. That was what she did. It looks like she felt drawn back to the person she had written about as well. You are not being judged by that tension. One of the most painful patterns in these kinds of relationships is that it happens in the background and out of sight until it’s no longer there.

Born in Kansas City, Sierra Foster writes about politics and serves as Senior Editor at kbsd6.com. She was raised paying attention to this city, not just living in it. Sierra has a strong, deep connection to Kansas City, from the neighborhoods east of Troost to the discussions that take place in the city hall halls. Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
