There is a certain kind of heartbreak that comes in waves. Over time, little disappointments add up until the weight of it all is too much to bear. That’s pretty much what happened with Scheana Shay and Mike Shay. Their marriage looked like it was getting stronger from the outside, but it had been slowly falling apart behind closed doors since the beginning.
Scheana has been more open about this than a lot of people thot she would be. After they announced they were getting a divorce, she talked about how troubled their relationship was from the start, when she found out Mike had a problem with prescription pills. That’s not a rough spot. That’s a crack in the foundation. And cracks tend to spread, as anyone who has seen a long-term relationship fall apart knows.
But she didn’t give up. That much is clear. She said that around the time of their first anniversary, she saw inappropriate text messages, but she stayed. Her promise to be with him “for worse” was what she told herself. Something almost painful about her level of commitment is how she kept seeing each new problem as something short-term and manageable. She thot that the marriage was based on friendship, and that belief kept her going.
Reports say that things got better for a while in early 2016. She said it really did feel good. That window didn’t last long, tho. Her mother and other people around her started to notice that Mike’s behavior had changed. Scheana said she might not have known, or maybe it’s better to say she didn’t want to believe what she was seeing. Being honest like that is something that everyone who has loved someone thru a hard time can relate to.

Tom Schwartz and Katie’s trip to Hawaii after their wedding in August 2016 was meant to be a fresh start, or “second honeymoon.” When they got back to Los Angeles, tho, the space between them had not shrunk. There was a lot of Mike at the studio. Scheana was often by herself at home. Then he just didn’t come home one day in October. For more than a week.
Even then, she wasn’t done with it. She said that she had never thot about getting a divorce. She was still sure they could get thru it. That could mean that she really cared about the relationship or that it’s hard to accept that something you put so much into isn’t going to work. Most likely both.
One dramatic moment wasn’t what changed things in the end; it was something simpler and more sure. She found out that Mike had been buying pills again and, what’s worse, had been lying about it for six to eight months. That was the line. “The second I found out he was still lying to me — I was done,” she replied. Not angry or over the top. Done.
When someone keeps breaking your trust, it’s hard to get it back. Scheana made it clear: how can you be together with someone you don’t trust? She had let a lot go—the pills, the disappearance, and the distance. But the lying that went on for a long time was something else. There wasn’t a slip-up or a moment of weakness. There was a pattern, and she could see it now.
In November, they said they were getting a divorce. In a joint statement, they talked about how long they had been friends and how they hoped to stay in each other’s lives. It’s still not clear if that will be possible. In early interviews, Scheana said that they talked to each other in a friendly but limited way. She said that after filming the Vanderpump Rules reunion, they weren’t talking much and that they felt like they needed some space.
A woman gave her marriage every chance she could until she ran out of reasons to keep trying. The story doesn’t end with a fight, but with a quiet ending.
