Watching a drone hover in place has a subtle unnerving quality. There is no cockpit, no engine roar, and no obvious indication that someone has decided it should be up there. It simply does as instructed, hanging in midair. And more and more, that’s the point.
Drones, or UAVs as most engineers prefer to refer to them, have been working toward this goal for a long time. Probably longer than most people think. In 1849, Austrian forces launched about 200 bomb-carrying balloons toward the besieged city of Venice, marking the first known use of an unmanned aerial device for military purposes. The direction of the wind shifted. The majority of the balloons failed. Over Austrian lines, some drifted back. By all accounts, it was a failure. However, the concept was, in a sense, already in the air.

It wasn’t until the First World War, when engineers from both sides began experimenting with radio-controlled aircraft, that the significant advancement occurred. The “Aerial Target” was constructed by Britain in 1916. The Kettering Bug, an unmanned biplane filled with TNT that would fly a predetermined distance before diving toward its target, was created a year later by American inventor Charles Kettering. Similar programs were operating concurrently in Germany. Each of these devices advanced the idea a bit, but none were particularly dependable.
Looking back, it’s remarkable how long these technologies remained confined to military initiatives. Unmanned aircraft operated in a sort of classified shadow for the majority of the 20th century, serving military and intelligence purposes while remaining virtually undetectable to the general public. For many years, the term “drone” itself was associated almost exclusively with surveillance and attacks in locations that most people couldn’t locate on a map.
That connection hasn’t completely vanished. The ethical issues surrounding autonomous weapons are still genuinely unresolved, and military UAVs continue to carry out combat and reconnaissance missions. Whether international law has kept up with the capabilities of these systems is still up for debate. It’s important to pay attention to that gap.
However, something changed in the 2010s when component costs significantly decreased and battery technology advanced to the point where consumer drones became a viable market. Businesses such as DJI began offering camera drones to hobbyists, filmmakers, and photographers. All of a sudden, electronics stores had access to technology that had previously been owned by defense contractors. The car had crossed over without a tripulado.
The applications now resemble a list that someone created by inquiring about the types of labor that people find costly, hazardous, or tiresome. Drones used in agriculture keep an eye on thousands of acres of crops. Drones used for infrastructure inspection crawl along pipelines and power lines, returning images that would otherwise need a crew and scaffolding. Following natural disasters, search and rescue teams use UAVs to scan the terrain. All of this has real, non-promotional value; it’s not just marketing jargon from startups looking to raise capital.
Most people don’t realize how advanced traffic monitoring is. Drone-based systems to monitor road conditions and collect real-time accident data are already being tested in a number of cities. Compared to helicopter surveillance, it is more affordable and frequently produces higher-quality data. Another question is whether the privacy implications have been thoroughly considered. Most likely, they haven’t.
Spending time in this field gives me the impression that we are in the midst of an ongoing transition. Technology is constantly evolving. With varying degrees of success, regulations are attempting to keep up. The public’s trust is still developing. Beginning as a bomb-carrying balloon over Venice in 1849, the vehicle eventually evolved into a classified military program, a hobbyist device, and finally something more akin to infrastructure. For any technology, that is an odd trajectory. It’s difficult to avoid speculating about the upcoming chapter.
