A man turning sixty-six who is still referred to by a moniker he acquired in his twenties is subtly remarkable. Yesterday was Jean-Claude Van Damme’s birthday. He was born in Berchem-Sainte-Agathe, Brussels, on October 18, 1960. As usual, videos of splits and spinning kicks quickly appeared on the internet. Every year, as I watch this happen, I get the impression that most people are much more familiar with the films than the athlete who made them possible.

The story of karate begins early. At the age of ten, his father enrolled him in a Shotokan karate school. He obtained a black belt by the time he was eighteen, and shortly after, he was promoted to second-dan. That isn’t the resume of someone who learned martial arts in order to land a movie role. That’s ten years of real training, the kind that sometimes costs teeth and leaves calluses. The fact that he trained under Claude Goetz at the Center National de Karaté in Belgium is often overlooked in favor of Hollywood mythology.

The extent of the training is often underestimated. The basis was shotokan karate, but it didn’t end there. He also learned Taekwondo, Muay Thai, and kickboxing. Most unexpectedly, he then studied classical ballet for five years. Over the years, he has discussed this in interviews, saying that ballet gave him the body control and flexibility that no amount of bag work could. The distinctive splits and high kicks that characterized his on-screen persona might not have existed in the same manner if he hadn’t spent those years at a barre.

More attention should be paid to his competitive record than it currently receives. He recorded 44 victories and 4 defeats in semi-contact and light-contact karate between 1976 and approximately 1980. His kickboxing record is 18 victories, all via knockout, and 1 defeat. He was a teenager when he won the European Professional Karate Association middleweight title in 1979. He participated in the Belgian national team’s victory at the European Karate Championship that same year. A period of athletic output that most people would dedicate their entire careers to achieving was completed in 1978 with the Mr. Belgium bodybuilding title.

Before anything significant happened, he came to the US in 1982 and worked as a bouncer, a limo driver, a karate instructor, and doing extra work in the background of dance movies. Bloodsport, which was shot on a budget of roughly $1.5 million and ended up making $65 million, was the breakthrough in 1988. It’s difficult to ignore how long the runway actually lasted—more than six years of hard work before that first significant break, bearing the burden of an athletic background that no one in Hollywood had initially taken seriously.

Since then, his movies have made over $3.3 billion worldwide. He has two statues: one in Azerbaijan and one in Brussels. In 2020, he was admitted into the Hall of Fame of the Martial Arts History Museum. These figures are not the result of pure chance. Whether a younger generation of action fans understands what set Van Damme apart from the wave of performers who cycled through the genre during the same era is still up for debate. Above all, he was a true fighter. The films were ranked second.

I am now sixty-six years old. And people still share splits. There are worse legacies to bear.

Born in Kansas City, Sierra Foster writes about politics and serves as Senior Editor at kbsd6.com. She was raised paying attention to this city, not just living in it. Sierra has a strong, deep connection to Kansas City, from the neighborhoods east of Troost to the discussions that take place in the city hall halls. Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
