You’ll likely get ten slightly different answers if you ask ten fans if Karate Kid: Legends is a Cobra Kai sequel. In summary, it is not a Cobra Kai film, but it does take place in the same universe and after the series. The question keeps coming up because both statements are true at the same time.

Let’s start with the calendar. Legends takes place roughly three years after Cobra Kai’s six-season Netflix run ended in February 2025. Returning as Daniel LaRusso, Ralph Macchio is a little older and more mature. That makes it a continuation on paper. Radio Times even went so far as to refer to it as a “sequel” to the show’s events.

Future possibilitiesMacchio hopes for a Cobra Kai movie; spinoff ideas include a young Mr. Miyagi prequel

However, as you watch the movie, your emotions shift. The narrative centers on Ben Wang’s character, Li Fong, a Beijing-born teenager who moves to New York with a kung fu obsession and a persistent family concern. In the 2010 remake, Jackie Chan returns as Mr. Han, the instructor. Later, Daniel arrives to instruct the child in karate. It is more of a meeting of two branches of the same tree than a handoff from the series.

Jonathan Entwistle, the director, was quite direct about it. Rather than being a Cobra Kai film, he characterized it as another chapter in the Karate Kid universe. After six seasons of dojo rivalries, it’s strange to hear, but it clarifies a lot. The show’s large cast of students, rivals, and senseis mostly stays off screen because the new movie wants new faces.

One exception exists. Near the end, William Zabka appears as Johnny Lawrence in a reconstructed Miyagi home. According to Entwistle, the production tucked Zabka away on set to prevent leaks because it was difficult to keep the scene a secret. It’s difficult not to wish the brief moment had been longer. Fans who watched Daniel and Johnny fight for years before grudgingly joining forces might feel that the movie merely makes reference to that past rather than making use of it.

There may be a practical component to the explanation. Legends is owned by Sony, while Cobra Kai is owned by Netflix. According to online discussion, this split made it challenging to bring in the show’s larger cast. It should be used with caution because that is not an official explanation. Nevertheless, it aligns with what was ultimately shown on screen: a film that shares a timeline with the series but does not heavily reference it.

Additionally, there is a minor continuity flaw that fans enjoy pointing out. Legends quietly complies with the show’s constant pretension that 2020 was a pandemic-free year. A line from early Cobra Kai that mentions Jackie Chan as an actor now sits awkwardly next to Chan’s portrayal of Mr. Han. These seams are accumulated by franchises this old, and the majority of viewers appear content to ignore them.

It’s another story how it landed. The domestic box office ended slightly over fifty-two million dollars, and reviews were mixed, with early Rotten Tomatoes scores hovering around the low fifties. Those figures don’t shout “runaway hit.” If Legends does well, Macchio has stated that he would like to see a Cobra Kai movie in two or three years, and the show’s creators have suggested ideas such as a young Mr. Miyagi prequel.

What does that mean for the answer? Most likely here: Legends nods to Cobra Kai once, shares its world, and follows it through time. However, it isn’t designed to carry on the storylines of the show. Consider it more like a new door off the same hallway than season seven. It’s still unclear if that door leads to a greater place.
