Tony Romo Net Worth: What He’s Really Worth After the CBS Split

Although some fan pages put Tony Romo’s net worth closer to $100 million, it is typically estimated to be around $80 million. The timing is more important than the gap. Romo and CBS Sports “mutually agreed to part ways,” ending Romo’s nine-year tenure in the network’s premier NFL booth, the network announced this week. The true story lies in the money behind that statement.

The contract should come first. Romo agreed to a $180 million, or $18 million annually, 10-year contract with CBS in 2020. After six seasons, four years, and about $72 million remained on it. This one involved a negotiated settlement, according to The Athletic. Networks typically don’t bid farewell to that kind of paper without a conversation. The sum has not been disclosed.

It’s simple to forget how improbable the entire arc was. Romo joined the Cowboys as a longshot after going undrafted in 2003, reportedly making just $10,000 in his debut season. He developed into the team’s all-time leader in passing yards (34,183) and touchdown passes (248). He earned more than $127 million during his 13 seasons in Dallas—more than any other undrafted player in league history.

The second career—possibly the stranger one—came next. Following Romo’s retirement in 2017, CBS added a rookie broadcaster to Jim Nantz’s lead team. Viewers quickly became aware. He sounded like a quarterback still wearing the pads, called plays before the snap, and made casual fans think they were smarter than they actually were. The analogy to John Madden wasn’t wholly ludicrous.

His first contract with CBS was worth between $3 and $4 million annually. According to reports, ESPN was prepared to offer him up to $14 million a year by 2020 to become Monday Nite Football’s face. Romo stayed after CBS responded with the $180 million package. Although some critics later claimed that his predictions became less common and his style more polarizing, at the time it appeared to be a wise wager.

This summer, fall arrived. Following a golf event, Romo was arrested in Milwaukee on July 23. His blood alcohol content was later determined to be 0.15, which is almost twice the legal limit in Wisconsin. Eight days later, CBS placed him on indefinite leave, and J.J. Watt moved into the booth next to Tracy Wolfson and Nantz. Romo acknowledged his guilt and entered a no contest plea to the civil OWI charge in September.

The next step appears so straightforward on paper that it is difficult to ignore. A buyout prevents a legal battle over morality clauses that neither party has read. Romo receives a sizable check, and CBS receives assurance. It’s still unclear whether that check is $20 million, $50 million, or something closer to the entire $72 million, and anyone claiming a specific amount is speculating.

The net worth estimates should be viewed with some skepticism because of this uncertainty. The majority of published figures were constructed prior to the settlement. By next year, the $80 million amount might seem low if a “good portion” of the remaining contract ends up in his account. The deal may hold if it is smaller than anticipated. Other sources of income include real estate, such as a 30,000-square-foot home in Dallas, and previous endorsements with Pizza Hut, DirecTV, Under Armor, and Topps.

Romo stated that he intends to take a break, “something I’ve never done before,” and concentrate on his family and well-being. That might be just what he needs. It’s unclear what happens to his reputation. Since good analysts are hard to come by, another network might still make a call, but it’s still unclear if anyone will want to pay close to $18 million once more.

She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
