Brandon H. Lee Cobra Kai: The Real Fighter Behind Cobra Kai’s Most Dangerous New Character

When Kwon Jae-Sung crosses a mat in Cobra Kai Season 6, something clicks that doesn’t happen with the majority of the show’s fighters. It goes beyond simply being quick or having a neat technique. It’s because the movement possesses an authenticity that is difficult to replicate. Given his background, it makes perfect sense to watch Brandon H. Lee perform those scenes. This isn’t a performer who studied karate for a part. The majority of his life was spent in a gym, and he is a fifth-degree black belt.

Born on April 7, 1999, in North Mankato, Minnesota, Brandon Holam Lee came from a Korean-American family that, unlike most people, took martial arts seriously. The U.S. National Taekwondo Team was coached and managed by his father, Grandmaster Yong Hyeok Lee, a three-time Korean National Taekwondo Champion. Later on, he established Lee’s Champion Taekwondo Academy in Minnesota. According to his father, Brandon was kicking before he could walk, so he didn’t just grow up around this. At the age of three, he formally began training at the dojo.

There was a noteworthy incident that accompanied that early start. When Brandon was three years old, he attempted to imitate Jackie Chan from Police Story, breaking his leg in the process. This particular detail seems too obvious to be true, but it did occur. He obviously wasn’t deterred by the pain that accompanied it. He continued to train and compete until he obtained his fifth-degree black belt, an accomplishment that typically requires decades of consistent dedication for practitioners.

The competitive career was genuine and intense. He earned a spot on Team USA in 2019 after winning the U.S. National Taekwondo World-class freestyle poomsae championship. At the 2020 World Taekwondo Presidential Poomsae Championships, he went on to win a silver medal. He then took a step back at a time when the majority of top athletes would be stepping up their competition. He desired to take action. Martial arts would help achieve that objective, not take its place.

Prior to Cobra Kai, Lee was Simu Liu’s stunt double in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. It’s a credit that doesn’t often receive first billing, but it’s important because it allowed him to work with professional fight choreographers in a major Marvel production and learn how top-tier action scenes are executed. Lee wasn’t starting from scratch when Kwon Jae-Sung, John Kreese’s prize recruit from South Korea, arrived in Season 6. He was aware of how this world operated.

Fans watching Season 6 Part 1 were taken aback by his acting prowess. Comments comparing Kwon to Hawk and Robby during their Cobra Kai years proliferated on Reddit, a compliment that highlights the character’s unique combination of intensity and volatility. Observing him gives the impression that Kwon is controlling his aggression rather than acting aggressively. It’s more difficult than it seems, but Lee does it with a poise that doesn’t seem like training. It reads instinctively.

In addition to hosting the podcast Shiblau Cast and running a YouTube channel, he shared the stage with Korean pop group NewJeans during the League of Legends World Championship opening ceremony in 2023. Another thing that usually stops people when they hear it is that Brandon H. Lee has absolutely nothing to do with Bruce Lee, despite the name, the martial arts background, and the timing of his career. The name is a coincidence. He is the only one with this talent.

The writing gave Kwon an intriguing storyline, so it’s possible that he was always going to be a breakout character. However, the decision to cast a relatively unknown actor with real martial arts training instead of a more well-known name paid off in ways that seemed unusual. When you watch Lee in those fight scenes, you get the impression that something authentic is taking place on screen. since it is.

Sierra has a strong, deep connection to Kansas City, from the neighborhoods east of Troost to the discussions that take place in the city hall halls. Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
