At the very end of the last episode of Cobra Kai, Daniel LaRusso can be seen standing in Johnny Lawrence’s corner while wearing a Cobra Kai gi. In 1984 or even Season 1, if you had said that, people would have laughed you out of the show. But there it is. The man Ralph Macchio crane-kicked to defeat forty years ago is now being coached by him in a black gi with his Miyagi-Do headband still firmly in place. Even though it’s the kind of picture that shouldn’t work, it does have a strange emotional weight that’s hard to shake.

The Sekai Taikai is won by Johnny Lawrence. That’s the short answer to the question of who wins Cobra Kai in the end. After the scores are tied, he beats Sensei Wolf, the intimidating leader of the Iron Dragons, in a sensei match that breaks the tie. Miguel Diaz wins the title for boys’ individual. Toy Nichols claims the title for girls. The Cobra Kai dojo, the real Cobra Kai dojo, has won the title of world champion. Five years of the show were spent showing what happens to people when they lose.

The victory that lasts, though, isn’t really about the score. Johnny Lawrence began this series living in a dirty apartment full of empty beer cans. He was still angry about losing a tournament many years before. The way William Zabka played that Johnny was so worn out that you could almost smell the old Coors Banquet through the screen. It’s truly satisfying to see him go from that to a man holding a world championship, standing next to his newborn child and the rival-turned-friend who used to ruin his life. Yes, but not in a neat Hollywood way. It’s more like seeing a friend finally get their life together after years of failing.

Getting to that last fight was a mess, which is one reason why it worked. The tournament was stopped completely when Kwon died in a chaotic fight. Because Terry Silver was dying, he fought his way back into the story to help pay for one last plan. Kreese, of all people, gave his life (or at least it looks like he did) to stop Silver from hurting Johnny’s family. The explosion on Silver’s yacht is left vague on purpose. No bodies were found. The people in charge of the show have said that because Kreese has come back from the dead before. We might not have seen the last of either man yet, but that fireball makes it seem like we have.

The character work that went into the ending made it feel real and not forced. Samantha is stepping down. Kreese giving Miguel Cobra Kai’s tournament spot. Daniel had to swallow decades of pride to stand in the corner of a Cobra Kai fight. These moments didn’t just happen; they’re the result of six seasons of slow, uneven growth. The show’s creators made it clear that they wanted Johnny to get rid of his demons from 1984. The writers must have talked about a lot of different options before deciding on this one. It’s clear. The ending doesn’t feel rushed or too full. The story seemed to know where it was going, even when it went off track.

When the tournament is over, everyone goes their separate ways. Robby and Tory get significant power. Miguel is on his way to Stanford. Eli and Demetri are going to college. Johnny ends up on the cover of Sports Illustrated, which is both funny and perfect in some way. In the Valley, he and Daniel teach a new group of kids from both of their dojos, which are called Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do. They are arguing over food in the last scene, like an old married couple living together. Don’t make big speeches. Not a dramatic ending. This is just two guys who have hated each other their whole lives, having dinner together and making each other mad.

It’s tough not to think that the show got something right that many of the time fails to do. The best endings don’t depend on who hits the first blow. It’s about who stops picking fights with the wrong people. In the last episode of Cobra Kai, Johnny Lawrence won the world title. But the real win came between Season 1 and that quiet dinner table, when a man who was broken slowly learned how to be whole again.
