Tommy’s Last Night Under the Stars: The Saddest Death in Cobra Kai History

People are killed off in some shows to shock viewers. Then there are shows that let a character die quietly, under an open sky, with people who loved him. That hurts a lot more. The first type of show is mostly Cobra Kai. Fights, broken bones, and drama at the tournament. But for a short time in Season 2, it turned into the second kind.

Many people think that Tommy’s death was the saddest event in the whole history of Cobra Kai. Not because it was exciting. Since it wasn’t.

Joey, Bobby, and Jimmy get Tommy from the hospital so they can go on one last camping trip. He’s going to die. They have already told him what they need to. So, his old friends from the first Karate Kid movie—the bad guys in a movie that most people saw as kids—take him into the woods to spend one last time with him. They drink and talk around a fire. Tommy goes to sleep. He doesn’t wake up either.

That’s it. That’s the whole thing.

It surprises you with how simple it is. The show had been moving quickly, with dojo rivalries, teen fights, and the usual building up of tension. After that, it stops. Tommy dies peacefully with old friends by his side, and the camera doesn’t have to do anything extra to make you feel that. Could be that’s why it works—no score going up at the wrong time or speech going on for too long. Just the faces of men who grew up together and are now on the other side of something permanent and nothing else.

The setting is part of what makes it hit so hard. In The Karate Kid, these were the bad guys. Kids who picked on Daniel LaRusso because their karate teacher taught them the wrong things. After many years, the men with gray hair watch their friend sleep for the last time in a tent in the woods. As I watched that, I got the sense that time changes people in a way that no tournament ever could.

It’s pretty close to Tory’s storyline in Season 6, and for some viewers, it might even be better. She gets home with good news, which is a rare moment of happiness for a character who hasn’t had many. When she gets there, her mother is motionless on the floor. In a different way, the scene is very bad. It comes out of nowhere and hits you hard, and Peyton List’s performance carries the whole thing without much help from the script. The next scene in the hospital, where Tory finds out her mother has been sick for years, is sad without being over the top. Everything had been held together by Tory for a long time, but this was the last straw.

In the last season, Kwon’s death at the Sekai Taikai tournament hits differently—it’s more shocking than sad, and it’s more violent than tender. It’s the kind of death that makes you not want to cry. Each loss on this show is important in its own way.

People still come back to Tommy, though. His death seemed to have a deeper meaning than just the plot. It was a reminder that things happened in the world of The Karate Kid, that the boys grew up, and that some stories end quietly while life goes on around them. That image of Johnny standing there the next morning, knowing what had happened but not saying much about it stays with you.

Cobra Kai was never a show that was quiet. It got its emotional moments from short bursts, usually in the middle of fight scenes. But Tommy’s death showed that the show could be more quiet when it wanted to be. The audience would remember that choice for a long time after the last episode ended.

Sierra has a strong, deep connection to Kansas City, from the neighborhoods east of Troost to the discussions that take place in the city hall halls. Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
