Hayden Panettiere Toxicology Testing Could Take Weeks — Here’s What We Know So Far

On a Sunday afternoon in Greenville, South Carolina, someone called 911 from the Judson Mill Lofts, which used to be a textile mill but is now a housing complex, to say that a woman was not responding. Hayden Panettiere was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m. on August 16. She was 36 years old. Advanced cardiac life support had been tried by emergency workers. It wasn’t enough. Since then, more and more questions have been coming up quietly, without much fanfare.

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office confirmed that the next day an autopsy was done. In a way, the results were incomplete. They showed that there were no signs of trauma that led to her death, but they didn’t say what caused it. As of right now, the official position is that the cause and manner of death are still unknown. It looks like the whole story will depend on what the toxicology report says in the end.

The coroner’s office says that report could take anywhere from eight to twelve weeks. Due to the circumstances, the timeline feels both normal and painful. Toxicology testing takes a long time because labs are often behind schedule, substance panels take time, and confirmations need more testing. There isn’t anything strange about the wait. It’s just that the name on this one belongs to someone that millions of people watched as kids.

In her role as Claire Bennet on Heroes, Panettiere became almost famous. She was the cheerleader who couldn’t stay dead, which has a strange weight to it now. After that, she played Juliette Barnes on Nashville for years with a raw, sometimes fraying energy that felt like it came from real life. Most people who knew her said she kept her life very public.

Earlier reports said that the first 911 call was linked to a possible overdose. But be careful with this information—that has not been proven as a cause of death, and the coroner’s office has been careful about what it will and will not say in public. No signs of wrongdoing or strange things going on were found by the police. The preliminary investigation didn’t reveal anything shocking; it only confirmed that there had been a cardiac arrest and an attempt to revive the person failed.

People who knew her well know that Panettiere was honest about her struggles with addiction and postpartum depression, especially in her memoir, which came out in 2026. The fact that she was honest made people respect her. But making a direct link between her problems and her death before the toxicology results are in would be going beyond what has been proven. It’s possible that the report makes things clear. It’s also possible that it brings up new ones.

There are reports that her on-and-off boyfriend Brian Hickerson was with her when she died, but it’s still not clear if he called 911. Sleepwalker, her last movie, came out in January 2026, and she was an executive producer on it. This may have been a sign that she was trying to move on to something new in her career. She passed away just a few days before her 37th birthday.

Alan “Skip” Panettiere, her father, called her “an incredible light and a force of nature.” There’s no reason to think otherwise. What the toxicology tests will show and how they will affect how her death is officially classified is still something that her family, fans, and investigators all want to know.

Sierra has a strong, deep connection to Kansas City, from the neighborhoods east of Troost to the discussions that take place in the city hall halls. Sierra, who is presently enrolled at the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Political Science, applies the rigor of academic study to her journalism. She writes about politics in Missouri and Kansas as someone who genuinely cares about what happens to the people in these communities—the policies that impact them, the leaders who represent them, and the civic forces influencing their futures—rather than as an outsider watching from a distance. Her editorial coverage encompasses state-level policy, local government, and the national political currents that permeate bi-state regional life. Whether it's a city council vote or a Senate race, she has a special gift for turning complex policy language into writing that feels urgent, relatable, and worthwhile. Sierra seldom sits still off the page. She claims that playing soccer on a regular basis has sharpened her instincts for political reporting because of the sport's teamwork, strategy, and requirement to read a changing game in real time. She's probably somewhere in Kansas City with her friends when she's not writing or on the pitch, discovering new reasons to adore a city she already knows so well.
